I’m retired and living alone. I am realizing that I don’t really know myself too well in regard to these questions and it will take some experimentation to find out where I fall.
It may take some experimenting, but this gives me a guideline to go by.
Small productivity space, routine, structured, late, busy. I would probably do best in the evening hours for any indoor work, but for outdoor or driving I prefer morning. I work at home & would like to schedule my day for evenings. Problem is my husband is home at that time & goes to bed early. Any suggestions other than sending him to the doghouse? lol!
It is great to see all of the factors that can make or break my day sometimes. I have a small productivity brain space, like a routine, with little stimulation. Still not sure about the best time of day yet, but curious to monitor it and see what happens. I think it is going to be early morning when I have no one around to bother me….
I definitely have a small productivity brainspace. I don’t do well with more than 2-3 “MUST DO” things per day. I am a diagnosed ADHD person so multi tasking is not my forte. I don’t like urgent surprises but I do build in space for them.
I have recently started to identify some of the things that help and hinder my productivity. Trying to soldier on regardless with kids/crowds/noise all around is a losing strategy though! I’m going to do some planning a bit later to test out these thoughts on my current work projects, as I am behind in a number of them!
Very enlightening…..I never realized how these factors played out in my day. I realized that even though I like to do many things at once, it might not be practical for me
Small productivity space – routine – later in day – busy. Exactly the opposite of what I am doing.
very interesting.I need to do important things at a slightly different time of day ,which was useful to discover.
I really feel good about today’s challenge. The way the issues are framed seem to lead to clearer options, and I am looking forward to trying them. Experiment #1: Multiple projects, general to-do list, biggest tasks late a.m./early pm., in a quiet space. My context: pathologically disorganized SAHM (working flexible p-t hours) of very curious and independent toddler. Husband well-intentioned but his help is somewhat limited. Wish me luck!!!!!
I like having a few projects but too many and I can’t keep track of everything and balls start to drop. Our home life suffers too re: enough time to plan and make meals, cleaning, etc. I have one too many projects on the go right now; however I do need to complete it. I liked the idea of getting my important tasks first thing in the AM. I’m going to focus on getting up 3 mornings a week and getting 2 hours of high productivity time.
I need to stay accountable, so I’m posting my results. I want to be more productive, and have better time management. Times when I have been most happy and productive is when I was working on a few things well! I can’t remember when I haven’t had a lot of things going on at once though. I have been running overstimulated for a while now, and would be happier and more productive if I was more in line with my internal motivators. I like fewer things with more structure, but with lots of flexibility to go with the flow. I can tend to be pulled in many urgent directions, but a little structure helps me to say no easier. I don’t like chaos, but thrive under peaceful conditions.
I prefer a few projects at a time with a routine but flexible workday. As far as productivity its morning or after dinner and I find as I get older I like a quiet work environment. So I will do homework first thing in the morning and then exercise and socialize when my late sleeping partner wakes up.

Hi: This is Sandra from Maryland, United States. This was a very helpful exercise. I prefer a few projects, but mixed on the spontaneity and routine. I am definitely a morning person and start to become distracted by mid-afternoon. I like a quiet work environment. I am a Web developer and analyst.
This is Toni from New Jersey, United States. I use my husband’s facebook account. I like fewer things and need routines. I work best in the morning. I also like it quiet. I am a stay-at-home mom of 3 children.
I know that I like fewer projects and more of a routine, but the time of the day I prefer to work is the challenge. I have always been a late sleeper but recently am finding myself up earlier and ready to get to work. I love to be in my office in town as we have a great group of realtors in our office and the energy is contagious! I have been going to the office in the afternoons but think that I should get in there by 9 every day and see where that leads me!
I realize my work style/ preferences have changed as I’ve gotten older. (Yikes!) I was a pediatric critical care nurse for years, and thrived on the hustle and bustle and unpredictability of my job. I’m now a legal nurse consultant with my own business. I prefer a quieter environment, some stimulation with spontaneity, with a desire for routine/smaller projects. Yet I tend to get bored with TOO much routine. This was an interesting assignment. Hopefully I’ll get it sorted out as the course continues.
So I jumped on the bandwagon in October…and fell right back off again. I won’t make excuses for myself…it is what it is. But it’s 2014 and I am ready! I am undergoing a significant transition at my J.O.B. which effects just about every aspect of my life. Especially my $$!!! I am trying to look at this as an opportunity…to grow…to change…to find the joy in my life. I know that there are many stumbling blocks ahead…I can’t say that everyday I’m going to feel or be as positive as I am in THIS moment…but I will try.
Kylie Browne – Thanks for your warm welcome below.
Deana Harding – Thanks “Grandma” – your support is greatly appreciated. Hugs…your Granddaughter! 😉
This helped me to focus on specific ideas. Although I already know my preferences, I am looking forward to figuring out how to make them work for me.
