Welcome to Day 3 of 7 Days To An Organized Home Office.
Today’s task will take about 1 hour for the average home office. Depending on your home office situation you may need more or less time.
We’re going to create a super-simple filing system – one that makes it easy to put papers away in the right place and also to find things when you need them.
Here’s how…

only have room for one filing cabinet which is controlled by spouse, which is a great system. If I need to find something, I know where it is. However, I do need some type of “filing” of my own interests, so I use 3 ring binders and have been trying to downsize the amount I have. Since retirement, I no longer need seperate work categories, (I did a lot of teaching and training of new staff) and have been working on deleting that paperwork. Over 11 months, I have downsized a tremendous amount and still have more to go. It seems to be working as I now can find things easier, but still a ways to go.
So today I have purged some stuff that was in a black four drawer filing cabinet. It is now in my “inner city” and as getting my household organised is my priority I am allocating that cabinet to the new household filing system. I have purchased some coloured hanging files to act as my top level differentiators and then I will use tab files to label my second level categories. I have written out a two-tiered set of categories using the examples helpfully given and I am ready to start some filing I think (haven’t said that in a while!). I haven’t made the tab labels yet, because I don’t trust myself to have not forgotten something, so instead I am using post it notes until all the paperwork is sorted and filed and then my reward will be to make all the pretty labels!!
I am so far behind. I got a good start on Monday, then had people coming to my office on Tuesday, another person scheduled that didn’t show up on today and I am really off track! I have to have a clean up office before people come so never got a chance to get the last two day started. I am disappointed in myself to say the least. I care for my husband (96) who is blind and has Dementia. By the end of the day I am too tired to start a project. I need to find a way to work through all the paper and get my home and office back on track. So happy that others are doing well and I am encouraged reading your comments!
I spent 3 hours going thru my files, making more files, filing differnt pieces of papers that didn’t have homes that I couldn’t find electronically. I organized my kids filing system everytbing from birth certificates to bank accounts for them, Then I re-organized my home organization filing system and purged what I was not looking at or using out of that. Then everywhere I looked I seemed to have run into more papers, reciepts, bills. I have a long way to go but boy do I feel so happy I did this project. I thinks it’s great now. I can’t imagine it in 4 days from now.
I wish I could afford this program
