Welcome to Day 1 of 7 Days To A Dramatically Decluttered Home.
Today’s task will take about 1-2 hours. Future day’s tasks will take about 1 hour. How long you spend depends on what you want to achieve.
We’re going to begin by making some life-changing mindset shifts so you can finally part with unneeded stuff. Then we’ll start clearing that clutter – and fast.
This is gonna be awesome – what are we waiting for!!

I had a really productive day decluttering my kitchen. I found the recommended steps helpful in letting certain things go.
I’ve been working on this for about 8 months now. I start at the beginning, go through to the end, and then start again, and each time, seeing things with new eyes, I get rid of (either in the bin or to charities) a whole lot of more stuff. And after each go through, I feel better and better. I just don’t have the nerve to do it all at once though.
Tick! 🙂
I did about 2 hours and I started in my bedroom as I work in it – which might have been a mistake – but I feel better that I can find stuff. Am going to do the relatively tidy by comparison lounge in place of the bedroom.
2 hours, 47 minutes on Step 2 of Day 1. And this is really already into my 4th day & night. My whole body hurts. I haven’t counted how many boxes, baskets, bags, & tubs I’ve cleaned out tonight, but progress is being made. Oh, & by the way, this is only 1 end of the living room. I think maybe most of the other end is mostly paperwork & mail to sort through & toss or file. I took out the full trash bag from last night earlier, but another overflowing one is waiting for the morning. Yes, I’ve been sort of a hoarder building up collections of stuff to sell on the internet, but that will begin fast & furious AFTER it’s all sorted, organized, & culled out. I really need the money, but I need my peace of mind first! Some of the stuff is left over from selling at flea markets with a friend a couple of years ago. I intend to start again early today with the goal of finishing Step 2 today, come hell or high water, unless I drop first. Please, I need all the encouragement I can get!!!
I spent 38 minutes tonight “preparing” to be ready to dig in on Step 2 of Day 1 (gathering up boxes & vacuuming all the cat hair off & out of them, getting a file box & folders to organize paperwork in as I went, got sticky notes to mark boxes & files, & vacuumed the floor for workspace). I even took a few pictures of the “before” to see how much progress I would make. I set my timer for 30 minutes & went to it. When the timer went off I was so hot, so got a cold Coke & sat on the sofa for a break, but even as I sat there I was cleaning up all the papers under the coffee table & decluttering the table. Set the timer for another 30 minutes and got back on the space I was working on. To be honest, the room looks like a disaster hit it. But I am taking a break now to cool off & write this before I go back in to get all the bags I cleaned out & other stuff that goes in other rooms, and I am only hoping it will look better then! Probably another 30 to 40 minutes work to clear out that mess. Tomorrow I will tackle it again. At least now I can get to my to water it before it dies. It was behind about 4 feet of stacked up floor space.
It still has a long way to go, but I am not giving up until I finish what I have started. I’m going to take pictures along the way & hope I can get up enough guts to post on Facebook to maybe encourage others who feel like their situation is hopeless & are overwhelmed by the thoughts of even trying. I keep track of my time spent during the day & night on an Activity Log & am keeping track of all the time on this project & will share it. Until tomorrow’s progress report, God Bless!!!
I’ll post my update tomorrow on my progress. Happy Easter everyone! He is Risen, & I’m rising with Him!
GO ME!!!
I’ve finally “started” tonight with the MMindsets written down, the questions & answers to each one. It is late & tomorrow after church & a visit with my parents, I’m coming home, meditating for a while to clear my mind & DOING Step 3! I am so looking forward to a new start & a new life!
I meant Step 2 which I am going in to print off right now, so I have the clear directions right in front of me for motivation & focus. I’ll be lucky if 2 hours of work will make a pretty good size dent in the living room since I’ve been stockpiling so much stuff to sell on EBay, but at least that stuff will be ready to start researching & listing THIS WEEK!!!
I had printed out the lesson and questions yesterday, which i reviewed before starting the living room today. I worked in a few spurts, as my son was home and needed help with travel plans. I liked having the questions and mindset quotes right there in front of me, and was able to organize my corner chest and put away some seasonal items, etc. I moved a box of things that don’t belong in the living room to their proper places, and had a big box of garbage and smaller box of garage sale items. It felt great to light a few candles in their sparkling clean holders and relax on the couch before dinner.
I am a day behind. Started on living room yesterday and the mindset questions are key! I printed out the questions and had them with me as I went through the shelves and cabinets. I got the kids involved too, which helped as a few coffee table books I would have tossed, my daughter liked. But we did get rid of three bags of things (give away, games, books). Hope to finish and move to kitchen today.
I absolutely love relaxing in my decluttered lounge room, feet up, sipping on a glass of wine. Toys, clothes, old magazines, knick-knacks, paper piles etc do not belong in my little haven!
I’m actually going to begin on Wednesday, my day off. I worked today and don’t have the time tonight (need to be awake for my job tomorrow) and after work tomorrow we have a commitment in the evening. I briefly read the material, and I’m excited to begin.
Just finished day one. Living room was not bad, so this didn’t take me long. I almost didn’t start due to work schedule today. But now that it is done, I’m glad I did. Got rid off a few old remotes, old magazines, and organized a few drawers that I didn’t even know what was in them..
I answered all of the questions. In thinking about doing without things, I know I can. I did have the experience of decluttering way back and one of the things was a basket that belonged to my grandmother. I’ve regretted giving away that basket. But in thinking about it, I really don’t know where I would put it. It wouldn’t go with the style of things in my home, and was a dust-collector. That’s probably what prompted me to get rid of it in the first place. I have another basket that was hers, a larger one, and it’s really old and different looking, made well, but again I have no use for it. So it did really thinking about these issues. I’m going to declutter the living room tomorrow. The difficult part will be getting rid of any papers that my husband made notes on, notebooks he had, and things he liked to look at, like his yearbooks and the old church directory. He died too young of a degenerative brain disease 1-1/2 years ago and though I didn’t have trouble giving away all his jackets to the Salvation Army (it was cold and people needed them badly) as giving them was helpful to others, and hanging them in the closet was not. Getting rid of personal things are different, as it feels sort of like throwing part of that person away. So that’s a bigger issue for me with decluttering.
Well day one is not over yet. Biggest challenge will be the music cd’s most are my husbands and I can not just toss what I think should go. It took me 3 hours but I was also dealing with Holiday deco clean-up. It looks great. I got rid of some nick-nacks that landed in the living room when we first moved in but I never loved them there. I did a keep but somewhere else box, sell box, and toss box. The somewhere else box were the family keep sakes which I have a place for. The sell box most of the very Juvenal movies my kids do not watch anymore which I will sell at the next consignment sale. Not too much in the toss box but old mags which I clipped the ideas I wanted from them and filed them. In addition I keeped a needs fixing list, needs cleaning list, and ideas list. The needs fixing list included things like the mess of cords around the entertainment center. The needs cleaning list once the cutter left I could see that my walls needed some scrubbing, needs carpet spot clean ect.. Ideas list is more like a wish list like a better way to keep the kids movies. I am hoping my hubsan will jump on the band wagon and be willing to let go some of the stuff.
In the past, I’ve tried to “toss it”. My husband sees tossing as throwing away money. If something is not being used and is cluttering my house…. I feel that is a waste of money. Why keep something with the mindset that you “might” need it someday. All of this information on your site is a wonderful find for me! 2014 is MY year!!! No more clutter and MORE organization!!!!
want to start positively so must tell you how much step 1 REALLY helped!!!
i’ve chucked stuff I’ve been holding on to for 20-30 YEARS!
found i worked in bursts, hard to maintain momentum so not completed living room in 1 go
(worked on step2 for about 2hrs)
I’ve posted a pic of the DONE end, and will do “Day1” step2 and 3 again tomorrow
the wonderful thing is i feel it’s DO-ABLE
thank you Michele!
Well, today is my first day! Answering the questions was most enlightening for me. I basically knew most of that, but writing about it brought it home on a different level. It’s going to take me another day to complete the assignment as I was quite “deep” in things that needed to be put away since I’ve been travelling and preparing for the holidays. Feels real good already!
