Yesterday we created a life-simplifying evening routine.
Today let’s do one for the morning…

Got my routines- had them before – needed to revise
Again, I think I had this one under control from last years efforts when I ran with the programme, again I have to accept that some mornings it might not happen but as long as it does for most then I must have got the detail/balance right.
I think a big stumbling block for me is the washing up left from the night before. I often think I’ll do it in the morning, then I get sidetracked and don’t have time then it is still there when I get home from work. So the big lesson I am taking from this is to plan to wash up each night before I go to bed. If for some reason I don’t do this (if I’ve had a big dinner party for example) I MUST force myself to do it in the morning! I am also going to try and vary my breakfast – spend a little more time about planning what to have rather than always going for the default option of peanut butter on toast! Here’s hoping… You should see my kitchen today as I made a birthday cake for someone before work – it’s chaos!
My mornings are still not as structured as I like. As I did with my revised evening routine, I cut down the list of things to do down and gave each a keyword to jog my memory. But in implementing my new evening routine I realized already some changes I want to make, so I imagine it will be the same with the morning routine. It’s a process, I realize, and I’m glad these challenges are helping me become aware of the little things I can do to simplify my day, as well as the value of having routines.
It’s definitely a process! 🙂
Also great! As long as I do the evening routine faithfully, the morning routine falls into place 🙂
The night before sets up the morning well, Kim. Especially if you’re vague in the mornings. Like I am!
I like to keep my mornings as simple as possible, so there is definitely more in my evening tasks than my morning routine. Again, though I want to live with it for a few days to check I’m not over thinking this! 🙂
Amanda I’m not a morning person AT ALL. I’ve learned life is much happier and smoother if I shift as much as possible to the evenings.
Morning routine created. It is almost summer break here, so I will have to tweak it in the fall, but I think the one I made will serve us well for not leaving the house chaotically through the summer. I may need to wake up a bit earlier to get it accomplished, but it will bring some more peace to our home.
But I bet you’ll sleep better with less chaos Briana. 🙂

I already had a small morning but know I have something more organized and helpful..My NEW Morning Routine, Bathroom Check List (face wash, brush teeth, etc..), Bathroom wipe down, Dressed, Bed Made, Get Sean Moving, All clothes in basket, Food/Fresh water for Jersey, Meat out for dinner, Makeup/Hair.
No dishes in sink, Wipe down Counter, Check Calendar and Check Weather.
Nice one Diane. You’ll feel very organized as you start the day. 🙂
My morning routine is to enjoy the time before everyone wakes – quietly – by reading on the computer and checking e-mail. I get the kids off to school, and then come back and do things when I don’t have somewhere to go. The things I need to get done usually I don’t get to until later in the morning when kids and hubby are gone. Is there an advantage to doing them first thing in the morning? I’d love opinions. Maybe I need to revamp my mornings, but I so look forward to them.
I would try a few different routines Lisa. There’ll be something that works well. Experiment and see how your productivity is affected.
I didn’t realize my posts here were going out to everyone I know on FB – sorry everyone!!
Sorry about posting a day late – just too many deadlines and too little day yesterday.
My morning list:
Meditate.
Breakfast.
Straighten bed.
Check email.
Check in with London client.
Write.
Edit.
I added Read my Top 5 Priorities List to my morning routine, and as with the evening routine, it’s the first time I’ve written everything down. I’m hoping it will help put some structure into my morning because right now I feel like I waste a lot of time.
I’m almost always at least a few minutes late for work. I have a really hard time getting up in the morning, and a bad habit of putting off evening tasks for the morning – like cleaning the litterbox. I moved all my “extra” current morning tasks to the evening and pared the mornings down to the bare minimum. Being on time is a priority!
Good thinking Jen. Keep trying different things – something will work really well. 🙂
Having a nighttime routine-makes the morning routine much smoother. I tend to do the same thing each morning and evening-but putting it down on paper makes me realize how much it takes to get to work each day and get to bed each night. I reviewed each list and noticed several routines were on both lists which has me wondering-it this necessary? Or have I just done it this way for so long I don’t know how to stop? Good exercise!
This whole challenge has been great! It is exactly what I needed. I shared with a dear friend how wonderful it was to come home and know what needed to be done and do it because I had a plan. I got my chores done and prepared dinner instead of getting take-out. Creating my morning and evening routines helped me realize that something important to me was not happening because I was not making time for it. I have put it into my routine. I love the “reading over the priorities from Day 2” it has really helped me stay focussed. Before I lost focus and would wonder why I never reached my goals. Thanks for this challenge. It fits into my life just right at just the right time.
I love this Lora! ♡

I have a morning routine written down , and most days I accomplish some of it. It includes checking my calendar and to-do list, which are on my ipad. I usually get sidetracked at this point and can spend way more time than I should messing with email, Facebook, etc. I feel guilty and my day just wastes away before me. 🙁
If you know where you get sidetracked, then change that Donna. Place those tasks later in the day, after you’ve accomplished more important things first.
I naturally have more energy in the mornings and move slowly at night getting stuff done, but I’m still open to changes. This past week was waaaay too busy and while I wasn’t doing each chore on the day it was assigned (see: perfectionism!) I’m keeping all these as a hard copy and on my notes in my iPad
This looks interesting… How is it working for you?
Great idea to keep hard copies–I am going to do the same. At this time I live alone so I don’t have anyone that I need to discuss things with, but that may change in the future–Mr. Right may show up or my daughter-in-law and grandchildren might move in while my son is deployed. I want to be able to continue this if my living arrangments change. Thanks for the idea.
Releasing perfectionism is a great goal Margo, so you’re doing perfectly. 🙂
I like the “remember to take” checklist. A simple idea, but not one I thought to do for daily use. That might help with the key things I panic about after leaving them behind, for example, my cell phone or a pen.
Sharon I made up a little mnemonic for myself: Please Keep Walking, for phone, keys, wallet. 🙂
I already have a morning routine, which includes starting a load of laundry, doing food prep for supper, sending an assignment in to work, watering my plants, etc.
I already have a morning and evening routine written out – my problems is motivating myself to do it when I would rather sit here drinking coffee and pretending to be working on the computer..
Ah yes that is a challenge Helen. Have you tried setting an alarm on your phone when it’s time? Or allowing yourself a reward only after completing your routine – eg 30 minutes of reading/web-surfing/Facebooking?
Mornings are gard. I try to do most of my stuff at night.
