Welcome to Day 10.
A great way to become a regular declutterer is to have a donation box set up in your home. Not having to worry about where something should go removes an obstacle to getting rid of things you don’t use or love.
Let’s set up a donation box and habit today.

I have a small cabinet in my entryway and I use the top drawer for clothing for donation. It doesn’t hold a lot, so it forces me to empty it out often. I live in an area where there are several donation places close by, I just have to remember to stop and not just drive by and let the items accumulate in my car.
I had a bright red boring plastic box before in the cupboard in the hall, which wasn’t working in terms of regularly making me place items there for donation. I have now put a nice wicker basket in my outgoing area so that I get a reminder each day, and when full I should notice it and take it to the op shop at the next possible opportunity. My only question now is – is it big enough for all the clutter i still have to get rid of?
LOVE this idea. I tend to purge with a carrier bag in hand sometimes and then take things to the charity shop. But actually having what is effectively a permanent receptacle that will get refilled then dispensed with is a great idea that hadn’t occured to me. I know exactly the box I am going to use!
I’ve added to the donation box I already had and promised myself I would call and arrange for a pick-up before the end of this month. I’m looking forward to reclaiming the current space the box is in, but after some more decluttering and re-organizing, I hope to find a regular spot for a donation box.
I made a donation box/shelf in my hall closet when I was doing Oi5. This reminded me that even boxes intended to declutter can become stagnant storage vessels in their own right – so I cleaned out the clean-out boxes 🙂

Like everything else in life, there’s no set and forget. We have to keep simplifying and decluttering, brushing our teeth and washing our hair, exercising and sleeping. But it feels good to have these good habits. 🙂
Done. I’m not sure where I have placed the donation box is the best place but nevertheless it has its place.
Amanda you can experiment with different locations but getting it set somewhere up is a great first step.
I keep small gift bags for some of my nieces and nephews whose families are not well financially. I fill these with things I no longer need but know they can use: stapler, note pads, pens, winter hats and gloves, etc. At this point in my life, I need to increase my income as much as possible, so I try to sell before donate any other things. They sit in boxes waiting for sake day, and go back in boxes to be immediately donated if not sold. May sound selfish, but my life circumstances have changed and I need to put my financial priority first.
Decluttering, whether by selling, donating or throwing away, is what we’re aiming for. If you have the time to sell your things and in turn be rewarded for that, good for you, Lety! 🙂 Kylie ~ Community Manager
I have a donation box waiting for me to call for pick-up (I don’t have a car so I donate to a charity that does pick-ups) and I’m going to set up another one to fill up with more stuff as I continue to declutter.
Great idea Ellen!
I chose a plastic round rope handled basket that I had been using to contain my grand-children’s toys. I put it in the front closet and already have it halfway filled up. What a great idea to have a designated container instead of just a bag! Love this idea.
This is my number one goal right now! Last week I bought four new trash cans (puppy proof) and the four old ones are going out the door tomorrow! Next step will be the less obvious, just getting rid of extra stuff but now I know where it goes. 🙂
And knowing where is goes can be such an obstacle. So yay Betsy!
I put put two bags, one in my dining room and one in my downstairs. They are not the ideal locations, but I will go by them everyday and they will be easy to move when company comes. I did find two things to put in thd bags and as a bonus found something I had been looking for.
Triple winner today Marie!
I LOVE this idea! I always wondered how to handle this. Such a perfect, simple solution. Thanks.
So glad you like the idea Lucy! ♡
I already have a box on the go, but I’ve moved it from a back room to a spot near the front door (where I can’t ignore it!)
Yes – making it visual is important Jen!
I stated a box about a year ago and it gets filled fairly regularly, I still need to work on actually taking it to the Charity shop on a more regular basis.
If you use an electronic diary then you could schedule a monthly reminder Diana. Automate it to save having to think about it. 🙂
I buy cereal in large boxes & whenever one is empty I try to fill it w things from around the house. Larger items go in oversized store bags. We put it in the basement bathroom, where everyone has their showers, so we see the boxes / bags a lot but they are not in a “guest” area of the house.

Good solution Faith!
Just moved from a 3300 square foot home to a 1200 square foot condo. Am really embracing a simpler lifestyle. Thought I had already purged everything. Looked around today and found several items to add to a donation box. Now I am putting it at the front door, so it leaves when I leave. Love this challenge.
It leaves when you leave – love it Elane!
Yay, already done! I’ve had that in place for years! Two drawer style stacking bins that sit behind the front door (out of sight when you open the door) that the whole family knows that is where donation stuff goes. When they get full I make a trip to Care & Share. Which happens several times a year!
Great system Cheri!
I keep a clothing donation box in our upstairs bedroom closet, and an ‘everything else’ donation box in our downstairs closet. Just this past week, I sorted, and got donation bags ready for two organizations that are having garage sales soon. Bags are waiting by the door now, to be dropped off on Wednesday.
Way ahead of me Marla! Nice one.
