Welcome to Day 2 of 14 Days to an Organized Closet.
Today’s task will take 15-30 minutes.
Yesterday we did a power-declutter and got some of the dead weight out of your closet.
With more room, we can now decide how best to make use of your available space.
So let’s begin…
If you’re signed up and logged in then today’s task will appear below.

My spaces were pretty much “organized” ok, just waaaaaay too much stuff.
I have now used a laundry basket for all my winter shoes/boots that are too large for the shoe cabinet. The plastic basket slides nicely in and out of my closet and gives me a good quick overview of the options.
Well, today my five 13 gallon bags of donations turned into six 50 gallon bags. It seems that my day one cleanout inspired the rest of the family to go through their closets and remove clothes that no longer fit or they no longer want to wear. I hadn’t planned on going through everyone’s closet, but you must strike when the iron is hot and we now have all gained back valuable space.
Today I reorganized where things will hang, moved all of my coats to an underused guest closet, and will be heading to the store to purchase a shoe shelf for more floor space. After discussing how and what I wanted to store in my closet with DH, we came up with a plan to move one of the hanging racks under the other for double hanging. That will give me enough space to add a tall shelf for purses, accessories, and folded sweaters. YAY!
Im pretty organised location wise. Happy with everything, except my shoes. No floor space in wardrobe so they are thrown in a tub. Open to suggestions!
Moved things around!!! Wonderful as I am very visual and like most things on display mode. Setting up things, along side my clothes, to encourage the use of accessories, hairpieces, jewelery and make up. Much better to see them together; makes getting dressed more exciting rather than a chore.
Today I wore to work a blouse I had totally forgotten I had, matched with a skirt that I haven’t worn for about 2 years. Two people complimented me on my outfit! I’m going to do more working through my clothes rails over the next couple of days, then on to day 3 as my space for clothes is more or less organised (but FULL TO BURSTING) x
running slightly behind but do already have single & double hanging space, basket drawers, and a wire shoe rack in place; think I need to work on using them more efficiently
Just moving things helps you to pick up things and touch them that you haven’t worn in years- so whyndomi still own it—-somoutnof here
Sorry! Auto correct at work! Just moving things around and picking them up when I haven’t worn them in years makes me wonder why I still own them?! So much stuff is “out of here!”
It took me alot longer in thinking time about this assignment than it did in doing. Sometimes I feel so disorganised that I don’t even feel comfortable with the places I do have organised.
We suggest/recommend the following:
You can also use a shoe organizer which hangs to save floor space.
Good clothes i.e. cocktail, formal, special fabrics should be hung inside zippered clothing bags to preserve the fabric and keep the outfits dust free.
Using basket or open drawers or dressers keep your clothes i.e. t-shirts, sweaters, etc. in zippered clothing bags to keep them clean and dust free. This will cut down on your cleaning bill.
I’m very late but I’m going o do this anyway. I don’t know if anyone has already mentioned this but I have put all my hangars in my closet backwards. When I wear something, it is hung back in the closet with the hangar the correct way. This way I can easily see what items have not been worn.
It’s the perfect time to start, Susan! The hanger idea is a good one, but you already know which items you don’t love or wear, so let these go now. 🙂
I think I need to invest in some closet organizing supplies. I currently had one long, sagging bar for hanging clothes. As I work through this process, I’ll figure out what I need.
I want to say that one solution to the “long sagging bar for hanging clothes” is to hang up fewer clothes, but you have already weeded through the closet and eliminated quite a bit. In fact, I probably now have more clothes than you do…So I won’t say that.
Good strategy, Jenna. If you do get supplies, look for wire or mesh drawers or baskets, as these allow you too see what you have.
I kinda got anxious & did day 1 & 2 today ;).
Well that’s a great start RItcha! That’s the hardest part DONE. The rest is kinda fun. 🙂
I think for the *most* part, my stuff was where it should be, but a lot of it was crammed onto the shelves in my closet, which are now quite a bit neater. I also finally unpacked my bag from the holidays, this is a good guideline to read over before unpacking from a trip! (Especially Christmas where I cam back from visiting family with a whole bunch of new stuff ;).
Anything that makes unpacking easier is a good thing! 🙂
Unlike most I probably have more hanging space but not enough shelving. Should I add some shelving or just be making the most of what I have? I also put some clothes in boxes but then I find I forget about them?
Hi Natalie. See how you go over the program. If by Day #11 you have plenty of hanging space left but not enough shelves, then add some shelves. If you find everything fits, then save your time and money. My advice is not to put clothes where you can’t see them – eg in boxes. Keeping things visible will make it easier to create outfits and to make the most of your clothes. See you at day #3! 🙂
I think most of my clothes re in the best spot. May swap things around in a couple of drawers – tomorrow – too tired now!
That’s a good start, Anne. 🙂
Well done Mrs D. Now you can start on George’s clothes!
Wouldn’t dream of doing that?? I didnt realise these comments come onto FB – thought I ticked the no box??
I really had fun with this task today!
First of all, I realised there were a few more items that could be stored elsewhere in the house. With yesterday’s de-cluttering and today’s re-arranging I suddenly have more empty spaces! Excellent! Then moved around a few things and wow! Loving it! The drawers are very messy however as I kept just re-juggling spaces and throwing things in!
In the process I found two beautiful Chinese paintings on silk neatly rolled up in the cupboard. We bought them in China a few years ago and I totally forgot about them.
Michelle, this is a great place to be just after two days! In previous wardrobe organising bursts or mine, I would simply just de-clutter as (per day 1) and the project would be finished there. But in your process there is quite a bit of time allowed for putting a bit more overall thought into it.
I am loving this new look when I open my wardrobe doors!
Now to a few questions:
– How do you store scarves best? I decided to use one of my pretty clean empty shelves for storing scarves.
– Any ideas on how to control mildew/mould getting into the clothes during those humid Sydney days? I will also be googling this as I think Shannon Lush might have some solutions.
– And, what to do with all the EMPTY hangers!
It did take me a bit longer though. 55min but I didn’t mind as I knew where I was going with this.
Hey Vesna, sounds like you are getting a lot done. For storing scarves, I have found that using an empty skirt hanger works well, just bring the sides together until it will fit the width of your scarves, then loop them up, don’t leave them hanging long. Or else, if you think they are too flimsy to do that, you could get a scarf organizer from Homecare. They have a really nice butterfly one, and it hangs in the wardrobe too. I’ll link it here for you. http://apps.homecare.com.au/Shopping/ASPX/Product_Detail.aspx?prodcode=LO13
Hey there Vesna. How fabulous that you found those Chinese paintings! I’m so happy that you’re enjoying the process – it will help you KEEP the clutter away, too.
We’ll come to accessories, but my main tip is to store them somewhere you can SEE them – perhaps hung on hooks on your closet doors or rolled neatly on a shelf. For mold I use those mold catcher things you can buy at the hardware store or supermarket – but Shannon will probably have a better solution. And we’ll come to empty hangers near the end. Hold onto them for now. 🙂
@[584179118:2048:Kaylene Matyas] Thanks for that Kaylene. The butterfly organiser looks really cute. Do you have one of those? Do they hold winter scarfs well? Do the thin scarves get crushed?
I currently do all of this already but I have always been conflicted when it comes to sweaters & t-shirts. I don’t like them to get wrinkled & then have to iron them so I have always hung them up.
If you have the hanging room then that will work for you Tami. For many people hanging space is precious, though. 🙂
I think I’ve done this. But the shelves are a bit chaotic. But I did tidy up all my scarves in the proces!
Don’t worry about the chaos for now Catherine – we’ll have those shelves looking pristine before we’re done! 🙂
Oops I sorted my drawers yesterday because I didn’t want my clothes strewn around the room after I emptied my closet yesterday! 😉
Today just focus on the 3 steps Mare. 🙂
Hey @[578998003:2048:Michele Connolly] I haven’t done anything today – Been at work all day and now going to bed. How do I catch up? 🙁
Mare you can do two tasks tomorrow or another day if you have time. Or you can do the tasks a day late with our US friends. 🙂
