We’re getting close to the end of the year. It’s a great time to think about refreshing our mental and physical space.
To decide, out with the old, in with the new.
Here are 10 ideas for clearing out clutter and old energy, and ushering in a fresh perspective for the new year.
- Get rid of any old, saggy pillows.
Replace them with new, fresh, fluffy ones. - Check your home, balcony, and garden for decrepit potted plants.
Instead, find some healthy, green, bursting-with-life ones. - Don’t go to bed every night in depressing bedlinen.
Invest in some new sheets in calming but happy hues. - Prepare to let go of your old diary.
And pick out a motivating new diary, filled with possibilities for the new year. - Don’t dress each day in discolored, shapeless, or tatty underwear.
Buy yourself underwear that’s practical and pretty – or manly for you dudes. - Let go of clothes you don’t wear, or don’t feel good in.
Rather, put together a range of outfits that help you feel your best. - Do a check for negative thinking habits that keep you stuck in old patterns.
Opt instead for more positive thinking patterns. - Consider easing out of friendships that have run their course.
You’ll be able to make more time for your important relationships. - Delete apps that clutter up your phone or iPad but never get used.
Replace them with apps to help with new-year goals – such as losing weight or organizing your home and life. - Toss out make-up and skincare that’s old, smelly, or no-longer-you.
Get yourself some fresher shades and products that help you feel your best.

The following is from my group:
It’s a great time to think about refreshing our mental, physical space or boundaries.
Don’t go to bed every night [or change bed linen weekly or bi-weekly] in depressing bed linen.
We are positive thinkers.
Consider easing out of negative or toxic friendships that have run their course.
If you have an email account deletes unwanted emails daily. Set aside an hour a day to do this task.
Toss out make-up and skincare that’s old, smelly, or no-longer-you. And your toothbrushes once a year.
That will be a good start in readiness for the new year anyway.
Sure will, Timothy!
wow that’s so strange I just ordered new quilts this morning so pillows will have to follow 😀 I also want to replace towels tea towels and flannels and my wardrobe definitely needs a revamp.
There’s something so therapeutic about freshening up your linen Chantelle – enjoy! PS If you need help with your wardrobe revamp you might like 14 Days To An Organized Closet http://www.getorganizedwizard.com/shop/home-organizing/14-days-to-an-organized-closet/ 🙂
Christmas day as I lay about in pjs started to put away some clothes we got-remembered the rule-must let go to allow room for the new. Did a fast purge of all dingy or hated clothes.and made quick order of what left-also took out & soaked collars of whites that got dingy.
Cool, Claire! OCI-OGO (one comes in, one goes out) is such a great habit for avoiding clutter creep. 🙂
6, 7, 9, & 10 for me.
Those are great choices for a happy 2013, Tami. 🙂
#5. Got a gift card to The Container Store. Saw a great drawer organizer. This weekend will work on socks, underwear and bras. Also, lost some weight and it is time to get new stuff anyway. So doing it all at once would be great!
Congratulations on your weight loss Tatyana! What a FABULOUS incentive to spring-clean your closet. PS It’s not too late to join 14 Days To An Organized Closet if that sounds appealing: http://www.getorganizedwizard.com/shop/home-organizing/14-days-to-an-organized-closet/. 🙂
I shall be doing 1, 4, 5, 6 & 10!
1) I was just looking at my pillows the other day & thinking they needed replacing, so this has been a good reminder to make it happen!
4) I have a Filofax, and every year my mum buys me the next years’ diary insert for Xmas. So I know I’ve got that to open on Xmas Day, which then gives me time to put in all the important dates etc before the next year actually starts. I’ll also go through my Filofax to remove all the old lists / notes that I don’t need any more, and probably get some nice new paper for it.
5) I’m guilty of this – as part of my wardrobe sort-out, I shall also be on an underwear mission.
6) Well, this one is all part of the 14 Days To An Organized Closet program that I’m going through with you at the moment 🙂
10) and actually, this one is also part of that, as my makeup is also in a set of drawers next to my clothes drawers, so that also needs sorting through (particularly given that makeup has a reasonably short shelf life, and some of it is probably a good few years old! Eww!).
That’ll be a good start in readiness for the new year anyway!
Great list Nikki! We spend a whole day (well, 15-30 minutes) on underwear, because it actually makes a big difference to the way you feel.
