Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!
In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your laundry.
Our focus is clarity, freedom, order. Now let’s do it!
Day 9: Organize Your Laundry
Step 1: Get a large bag. Quickly scanning your laundry shelves and benches, throw into the bag:
- Old paint cans, tiles, etc
- Decrepit brooms, dustpans, cleaning equipment
- Cleaning supplies you don’t use
- Empty bottles of laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc
- Tatty baskets and hampers
- Broken irons, ironing boards, etc
- Anything moldy, mildewed, or yucky.
Step 2: Pop your bag into the trash.
Step 3: Remove anything from the laundry that should be stored elsewhere – eg:
- Car-related stuff –> in the garage
- Random clothes –> in the closet
- Spare paper towels –> in the pantry
- Spare bulbs –> in the hall closet
- Towels –> in the linen closet; etc.
Step 4: Do a quick tidy of your laundry shelves.
And you’re done!
Got an Extra 5 Minutes?
Review your laundry equipment and supplies. Make a note of anything you need to replace, update, or purchase so that doing laundry takes as little time and effort as possible. Check that you have:
- A washer and dryer that work well, and are of the right size for your family’s needs
- Laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer softener sheets, stain remover, etc – in sufficient quantities for your household routine, and appropriate for your needs (eg for cold water, front loader, etc)
- Laundry hampers – one in the laundry (or several, if you sort whites, colors, etc); or one in each bathroom; or one in each bedroom (this can be more effective with kids)
- A laundry basket for transporting clothes
- An iron and ironing board.
Now doesn’t that take some of the pain out of doing laundry?

This one was easy. I keep a neat laundry room. But good to keep it up.
Pingback: I Love Organizing….once I am done.
Done, and we painted and put down new linoleum. Now it’s bright and organized.
My son gave me 3 shelves in my laundry room, which is (unfortunately) in the garage (sigh!). So I have made good use of those and they are still neat and tidy. But I did notice that I kept the old broom and an old hamper because they seem ok for the old garage. I will throw them out when I get my new place, and then buy some nice new replacements at that time!
Finished and loving the clean.
Done! Accomplished!
Done.
Done! Thank you!
done
did this on it’s appropriate day.. this one was easy. the laundry is just a laundry – no shelves, just the machines, but it was nice to clear the tops and wipe them down, empty the trash, toss the toys left in pockets and collected from the washer, …. nice!
Thanks again!
I day late, but done! This task was overwhelming, so I procrastinated. But, once I got started it wasn’t so bad. Our laundry room is big, so it’s also a general storage room for lots of my hubbie’s stuff. Got his stuff organized too, and he even let me throw some stuff out! ;-)!
This is complete. Now I can reach my toilet paper and some paper towels without a stool. Very exciting.
Done – on Sunday. Was out of town yesterday.
Day 9 complete
Day 9 complete. 4/9/11
Wow! We are in the midst of a complete garage facelift and re-organization! Will be able to use all the guidelines during this process! Terrific!
Day #9 Done…a day late, but so nice to go in there now! Well…almost!
Done! I really needed this one, Thank you!
Just a small closet where washer and dryer (stacked unit) live. Laundry basket holds all laundry supplies. No need to do this one.
WOW!! This is fun. Because my laundry and linen closet are located in the same closet I combined 8 and 9. Didn’t take long because I had just done it about a month or so ago.
I love this.
