30-Day Organize-athon | Day 9: Organize Your Laundry

30-Day Organize-athon 09

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your laundry.

Our focus is clarity, freedom, order. Now let’s do it!

Day 9: Organize Your Laundry

Step 1: Get a large bag. Quickly scanning your laundry shelves and benches, throw into the bag:

  • Old paint cans, tiles, etc
  • Decrepit brooms, dustpans, cleaning equipment
  • Cleaning supplies you don’t use
  • Empty bottles of laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc
  • Tatty baskets and hampers
  • Broken irons, ironing boards, etc
  • Anything moldy, mildewed, or yucky.

Step 2: Pop your bag into the trash.

Step 3: Remove anything from the laundry that should be stored elsewhere – eg:

  • Car-related stuff –> in the garage
  • Random clothes –> in the closet
  • Spare paper towels –> in the pantry
  • Spare bulbs –> in the hall closet
  • Towels –> in the linen closet; etc.

Step 4: Do a quick tidy of your laundry shelves.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

Review your laundry equipment and supplies. Make a note of anything you need to replace, update, or purchase so that doing laundry takes as little time and effort as possible. Check that you have:

  • A washer and dryer that work well, and are of the right size for your family’s needs
  • Laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer softener sheets, stain remover, etc – in sufficient quantities for your household routine, and appropriate for your needs (eg for cold water, front loader, etc)
  • Laundry hampers – one in the laundry (or several, if you sort whites, colors, etc); or one in each bathroom; or one in each bedroom (this can be more effective with kids)
  • A laundry basket for transporting clothes
  • An iron and ironing board.

Now doesn’t that take some of the pain out of doing laundry?

Lovely! Only needed minor work – but I would really like somewhere to store my vacuum rather than next to the laundry basket & washing machine. Maybe taking a chunk out of the linen closet shelving. Thanks.

  2. Terri says:

Easy day. This room has good storage space since we put the cabinets in there. Detergents and laundry supplies organized!

  3. Sara says:

Just returned from vacation so started with today. Laundry room was an easy one since it’s really a closet. Took the extra time to wipe down appliances and sweep around them. Going to go back and do the first 8 tasks on my days off.

  4. Arielle says:

Done! I don’t have a laundry room—just a little corner for my washer & dryer, but I cleaned off the surfaces of both appliances, & organized my detergents and other cleaning supplies. Looks much better now!

    Hi

5 minute task done now leaves another 5 hours or so to finish it as a lot of reorganising needs doing in there lol

As our laundry is also the main exit point of our house a lot of extra stuff ends up in there so there is a lot of removing and replacing stuff to be done in there

    See you tonight in Australia
    Luv Deb

  6. David says:

Mmm – I see laundry in American – means the cupboards under the sink where cleaning materials are kept. I spent the five minutes just tidying them up. I keep them de-cluttered anyway. Laundry to be washed is placed in the laundry basket in my bedroom cupboard. Laundry is done twice a week – Mondays and Thursdays. Ironed on the same day, aired then folded, or put on hangers in the built in wardrobes. I have a little saying

“Keep on top of the laundry, or it will get on top of you” – Ok It’s not Shakespeare but it keeps me motivated.

  7. Traci says:

This chore was easier and a chore I had put off. There was not much to straighten in my laundry area. It is the same as one of the other participants, the back entrance to the house and used often. I HAVE to keep it organized and clear. But, what I have been meaning to do is get behind the washer and dryer and pick up what has fallen. It was more than I thought!!! This was a fantastic chore to complete! I feel great!
    Thanks!!

  8. Linda says:

done, that was an easy one for me. w/d behind folding doors, closet type, not room for much to collect there.

  9. Caitlin says:

And used the time/occasion to teach 9 1/2 year old to do her own laundry! W’ere in NM w/310 days of sun … so hopefully she’s out back hanging it now!
