Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!
In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your laundry.
Our focus is clarity, freedom, order. Now let’s do it!
Day 9: Organize Your Laundry
Step 1: Get a large bag. Quickly scanning your laundry shelves and benches, throw into the bag:
- Old paint cans, tiles, etc
- Decrepit brooms, dustpans, cleaning equipment
- Cleaning supplies you don’t use
- Empty bottles of laundry detergent, fabric softener, etc
- Tatty baskets and hampers
- Broken irons, ironing boards, etc
- Anything moldy, mildewed, or yucky.
Step 2: Pop your bag into the trash.
Step 3: Remove anything from the laundry that should be stored elsewhere – eg:
- Car-related stuff –> in the garage
- Random clothes –> in the closet
- Spare paper towels –> in the pantry
- Spare bulbs –> in the hall closet
- Towels –> in the linen closet; etc.
Step 4: Do a quick tidy of your laundry shelves.
And you’re done!
Got an Extra 5 Minutes?
Review your laundry equipment and supplies. Make a note of anything you need to replace, update, or purchase so that doing laundry takes as little time and effort as possible. Check that you have:
- A washer and dryer that work well, and are of the right size for your family’s needs
- Laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer softener sheets, stain remover, etc – in sufficient quantities for your household routine, and appropriate for your needs (eg for cold water, front loader, etc)
- Laundry hampers – one in the laundry (or several, if you sort whites, colors, etc); or one in each bathroom; or one in each bedroom (this can be more effective with kids)
- A laundry basket for transporting clothes
- An iron and ironing board.
Now doesn’t that take some of the pain out of doing laundry?

done! not too hard as I had done a “clean sweep” of my laundry closet at the start of the year.
Ha! I did this one 2 weeks ago…..but I DID go down and wipe down the washer and drye!
OK It has just gone midnight here but I can now go to sleep feeling very proud of myself. I started this task when we were asked to spend 5 minutes in our linen cupboard. Well the lucky girl that I am, I have a walk-in linen cupboard that is in my laundry. This cupboard houses the linen, my craft stuff (mostly fabric) sewing machine, board games, puzzles, christmas decorations (if I put them in the garage my hubby throws them away, he has no christmas spirit lol) and the internet/phone modem (BOB), the vacuum cleaner, mop/bucket, you get the idea. I have also added an ‘action station’ to my laundry room. Some hardware store shelving that is used to sort, fold, distribute the washing. I even have an ironing section. All I need now is for my hubby to put the dryer up on the wall for me and to hang the curtain track. I would also love to show pictures of my efforts but don’t know how to do it here LOL. Goodnight.
Done, this was easy.
I wish I had my own laundry room here at my apartment, but I don’t :(. However, Saturday is always laundry day for me, so I’ve got all my laundry that needs to be washed sorted and ready to go. I do have one wicker laundry basket that’s going to eventually fall apart due to the fact that my five year old likes to climb in it so he’s broken the top. However, when the laundry bag is inside of it, you really can’t tell so I am going to hang onto it until I can afford to buy another one. After my coffee and allergy medicine kicks in, I’m heading to the laundry mat.
Again, I took more like an hour to do this, but I wanted it done right. I took before and after pictures this time!! 🙂 Hope to post on my blog later today.
done!
Got it done!
Done. THrew out our old ratty hamper in the bathroom! Now I get to replace it with something more modern and not as “dog-chewed!” 🙂
I did my 5 minutes. Completed that task but want to continue with a deeper clean so ONWARD! I won’t take long.
done already
Done, and man did it need it!
Done!
Done!
This was easy! Our laundry has no shelves (or it did, except that the previous house owners didn’t screw them into studs, and so the shelves came crashing down in the middle of the night), and there isn’t enough room to put anything in there other than the washer/dryer themselves! Done! 🙂
done done done 🙂
Done! All I can say is ewww…
Just replaced the broken timer on my dryer the other day and cleaned the lint from behind while I was at it. Now I need to organize the gift-wrapping supplies in the cabinet and take my pile of stuff to Goodwill, and it’ll be nice and tidy!
did it
This is an easy one, since my laundry area is not cluttered, so I took the time to wipe down the washer and dryer and area.
