30-Day Organize-athon 08

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your bed linen, towels, and table linen.

Think: clarity, freedom, and order. Let’s start.

Day 8: Organize Your Bed Linen, Towels, & Table Linen

Step 1: Get a large bag (you may need to buy more bags soon!) and open up your linen shelves. Moving quickly from top left to bottom right, toss out any:

  • Sheets and pillowcases that are old, stained or tatty
  • Towels that are old, stained or tatty
  • Tablecloths that are old, stained or tatty
  • Napery that is old, stained or tatty
  • Blankets that are old, stained or tatty
  • Quilts that are old, stained or tatty
  • Bed linen, table linen and towels that are surplus to your general needs (allow for guests and keep a couple of old towels for spills and leaks).

Step 2: If something is really lovely, and can be rejuvenated by laundering or dry cleaning, and you’re certain you’re happy to make the effort, then put it into a separate bag. It’s unlikely anything else will be donation-worthy, except perhaps excess table linen that’s in good condition.

Step 3: Pop your bag(s) into the trash and/or take to the car for dry cleaning/donation.

Step 4: Do a quick re-order of your linen closet to make better use of the newly liberated space.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Check your pillows – do you need to update them? If so, add pillows to your shopping list.
  2. Organize your linens with the main fold facing out, toward you. It looks much nicer this way. Smile
  3. If you have an attractive table, consider dispensing with tablecloths altogether in favor of placemats. You’ll save on storage space and laundry.

Now don’t you just want to admire your beautiful linen closet?

done! though you won’t get me to part with my “old” quilts–they are hand stitched heirlooms!
8 out of 8 so far! Thanks for the encouragement and the prompts.

to repeat a comment Kimberly Cole made at the start of this comment string, PLEASE remember the homeless ANIMALS —

Animal shelters (Humane Society, RSPA or SPCA, depending where you are) would love to have your stained sheets, towels and blankets to provide comfortable bedding for the creatures in their care
Think of it as a double “good deed” because, rather than putting them in the trash bin, you are recycling as well as helping a good cause.

Day 8 done! This one was an easy one for me, as I don’t have much in the way of extras, as far as sheets, towels, etc. goes.

  3. Magi says:

Always told myself I’ll buy new pillows but never got to it. Today, at last, I threw them out & now I am forced to buy new ones. Till then….

  4. Joni says:

    Done!
No more saving the frayed, stained (mostly with hair color!), or mismatched towels until I get nice, new, pretty ones that match the bathroom. By tossing the uglies, I’m ‘forced’ to go shopping for new ones! Now, you explain it to my husband, please. 🙂
    Thanks!

I didn’t have many towels/linens to throw but did manage to remove holiday hand towels I never use that will go to Good Will. However, since my linen closet also serves other purposes — I did throw out old medicines, lotions, shoe polish, and other items that were out-of-date or no longer needed. Feels good to tidy-up!

well i did mine about 2 weeks ago. But i am thinking of weeding out some tablecloths and donating them because i took my beautiful antique dining table, got have clear plastic put on it and now it is a wipe clean surface. for eating we use placemats that i made from scrap cloth.
