30-Day Organize-athon | Day 6: Freshen Up Your Crockery & Glassware

30-Day Organize-athon 06

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to freshen up your crockery and glassware.

Remember: take a deep breath and think clarity, freedom and order, as you go.

Day 6: Freshen Up Your Crockery & Glassware

Step 1: Get a garbage bag and line it with some newspaper.

Step 2: Quickly scan your crockery and glassware. Put into your bag any bowls, plates, cups, saucers, mugs or glasses that are:

  • Chipped
  • Stained
  • Mismatched
  • In poor condition
  • Ugly promotional items.

Step 3: Place your bag in the trash or empty it into the recycle bin as appropriate.

Step 4: If you need to replace any items, make a note on your shopping list.

Step 5: Do a quick tidy of your remaining crockery and glassware so that:

  • Similar things are together, and
  • Most commonly used items are most easily accessible.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

Decide to abandon your ‘special occasion’ stash.

  1. If you have glasses, crockery or other items you only use for special occasions, consider abandoning this idea.
  2. If the items are too delicate or not your taste, perhaps you could donate them?
  3. If they’re nice and usable, perhaps you could integrate them with your everyday stuff and get pleasure out of them more regularly? You’ll also save yourself the trouble of packing them away after every use.

Now won’t meals be more pleasurable?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

Move fast. Don’t overthink. Let it go!

I was bequeathed some lovely silver cutlery recently. It sat on the bench,
wanting me to decide. Last weekend I did. It’s only a setting for two,
Grosvenor silver, lovely entree and main knives and forks. They are now our preferred cutlery set, for breakfast, dinner or whatever. Oh for the spoons…

Also along for the ride are lovely silver coffee spoons, dessert forks and
spoons. These are the little items my step mother saved from her life with my dad, taken to the nursing home. There is no room for special stuff in my life, it gets used, as these lovely pieces will now be, or they go to another appreciative owner. My partner wants to get a dinner set we can use in the micro, I say no, use your tupperware in the MW and my nice stuff on the dinner table.

Love this idea of using special occasion dishes for every day. Your family is special and meal time together should always be family time – not frantic time.

  3. Becky Gillis says:

This one was easy. I do this on a regular basis with some help from the kids 🙂 Seems like we always need new glasses!

  4. Leia says:

We’ve done this one; one set of dishes, one set of glassware, two extra bowls for cereal and small servings. 🙂

  5. Cathy says:

Well, wehave just enough at the moment ot get by but this task made me realise it is probably time to update and get rid of the mismatched sets so a shopping list has been prepared!

  6. Denise says:

This one is PERFECT for me. I love bowls…I hoard bowls! I’ve actually realized in the past few weeks that I need to get rid of some. I’ve also realized that we are going UNDER from all of the sports bottles we have. (4 kids and a hubby in at least one sport each). I’ll be getting rid of some of those too!!

  7. Jessica says:

Consider this one done as well. We recently moved (6 weeks ago) and I made sure to donate probably half of my kitchen stuff because I realized I never used any of it!

  8. Olga says:

That was bad, as my kids loves to break plate, cups ….. and they don’t do it in some matching order 🙁 . Done it 🙂

  9. Kimberly Cole says:

Woo! This was an easy one for me considering that I’ve only got one small set of dishes and not nearly enough cups (I’m eventually going to buy a whole new set when I have some extra money to spend). I did get rid of a couple of butter bowls and cottage cheese containers which I save to store leftovers in, but I figure four of each is more than enough.

    Hi Michele,
Great advice. When we got a really nice set of Villaroy and Boch crockery for our wedding, the sales lady recommended we use it every day. Her exact words: “You’ll love the pieces you use and resent the pieces you don’t.” So true.
