30-Day Organize-athon | Day 4: Declutter Your Bathroom Cabinets

30-Day Organize-athon 04

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-declutter the cabinets in your bathroom.

As usual, inhale a sense of clarity, freedom and order, then let’s get to it!

Day 4: Declutter Your Bathroom Cabinets

Step 1: Grab a large garbage bag.

Step 2: Open up your bathroom cabinets and, quickly scanning from top left to bottom right, toss into the bag:

  • Medicines past their expiration date*
  • Medicines for conditions that no longer apply*
  • Old, expired or yucky toiletries
  • Old, expired or yucky make-up
  • Old, expired or yucky bath/shower products
  • Ancient or dirty hairbrushes and combs
  • Old perfumes and lotions
  • Empty or mildewed bottles
  • Anything gross or unpleasant to use
  • Anything that hasn’t been used in the past 12 months.

Step 3: Throw your bag straight into the trash. Euw!

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Refresh your first-aid supplies:
    –  Make a list of items you need for a first-aid kit – including bandages, medicines, antiseptics and other emergency supplies appropriate for your family’s needs
    –  Check your bathroom cabinet for missing items and add these to your shopping list.
  2. Take everything out of your cabinets, wipe down the shelves, and return everything neatly.
  3. Rearrange your cabinets so that:
    –  Similar things are together (eg all oral care items are together), and
    –  Most commonly used items are most easily accessible.

Now don’t you just want to admire those cabinets?

I didn’t do too badly today, but still took waaaaayyyyyy longer than 5 minutes. 5 minutes is actually pretty good for maintenance (which shouldn’t be hard now!)

  2. Megan S. says:

Did it and there was a garbage bag full of stuff. After an hour, I had to quit, but I can still do more. I’m thinking after April ends, I should start over at Day 1 and go through all 30 tasks again. It feels like I can always do more even though I’m averaging closer to an hour per task and not 5 minutes. It is true though that once you start you just want to keep going! Bring on Day 5!

  3. Julie says:

Aaaaahhhhhhh…done!!!! This has been on my to-do list for some time now — nice to just scratch it off. My poor garbage can is getting REALLY full with each of these challenges, though. I guess better the garbage can full than every nook and cranny in my house!

  4. Katia says:

Done! In a way, anyway. I’m actually still moving in and have already tossed everything for the bathroom, so I took the time to actually put stuff away and organize it neatly instead of just cramming it into drawers wherever it fit!

  5. Kim says:

Holy cats! I thought I was on top of this…Got 2 full kitchen trash bags FULL of stuff to toss. Lots more than that in the linen closet (where I keep all our medicines…the humidity in the bathroom can degrade them) went to the give away pile too!

  6. Traci says:

I did 2 bathrooms. I am not tackling the daughters. I will have one of them o it when she gets back from visiting her brother (kids are on spring break.) I did not want to do this one for some reason. It wasn’t hard, I don’t have medicine cabinets…but had to tackle drawers and under the sinks. Ugh. To bed I go. Hope I am ready for tomorrows challenge. It’s a busy day.

  7. Lavinas says:

Another task that I completed last week, however when I did the task I did have lots of old shampoos and creams that needed throwing out. My bathroom cupboard is almost empty now. I also cleaned all my makeup last week and did throw out some old eyeliners and mascaras.

The idea of stocking the first aid kit is great as mine was somewhat lacking, but will be restocked with this weeks grocery shop.
