30-Day Organize-athon | Day 21: Organize Your Pantry

30-Day Organize-athon 21

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your pantry.

Let’s start.

Day 21: Organize Your Pantry

Step 1: Grab a bag and open your pantry. Quickly scanning your shelves from top to bottom, toss into the bag anything that:

  • Has passed its use-by date
  • Is stale or unappetizing
  • No-one eats.

Step 2: Do a quick tidy of the remaining items in your pantry.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Wipe down your pantry shelves.
  2. Check your stores of pantry staples. Add anything you need to your shopping list.
  3. Notice anything you have in excess supply. Make a mental note to stop buying these items.

Now doesn’t that feel fresher!

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

Much like the fridge, this one was any easy mission! Not much there before I started, next to nothing when finished. I think I have my next grocery shopping visit already planned out for me. It sure will be a lot easier to handle, going in without the assumption that “I think I might have that already”!

I have a pantry inventory sheet where I keep track of what’s in my pantry and how many. As I use an item I mark it off. The sheet I use has about 10 little boxes where you put a slash mark / in it as you stock your pantry and then as you use an item you put another slash mark going the opposite way \ so that you make an X. This lets you know when you need to restock. Also when the item is low I will wipe down the area with a damp cloth and dust off my cans. I also will take the boxed items and put them into a plastic storage container, like Tupperware, to keep the bugs out and it seems to keep things fresher. I’ve done this for years.

I keep shelves organized for specific content. Top shelf is reusable grocery bags; Second shelf is for kitchen towels and dish cloths plus paper goods; third shelf is for family foods (cans of soup, dinners, rice, potatoes, etc.; fourth shelf is the kids’ stuff for school snacks and after school snacks; fifth shelf is for pots, pans and lids (discussed in an earlier blog entry); lastly is floor (nothing!). I love a clean closet and pantry!

Yeah! day 2 for me. I do what I can do and my husband takes care of the heavy stuff. 3 more weeks before I can lift over 2 pounds. So glad to find this site. I was afraid it would be more then I could handle. When I go back to work in 3 weeks I will feel like I have accomplished something! Thanks!

I did this one last week. I love it when I am ahead of the game! Of all of the tasks so far, cleaning out the kids toy was the most challenging!
