30-Day Organize-athon | Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

30-Day Organize-athon 02

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-clear the hanging part of your closet.

Take a deep breath as you imagine inhaling a sense of clarity, freedom and order, and off we go!

Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

Step 1: Grab a large garbage bag.

Step 2: Open up the hanging part of your closet and, quickly scanning your clothes from left to right, toss into the bag anything that:

  • Doesn’t fit
  • Feels scratchy or unpleasant against your skin
  • Is in a shape that doesn’t suit you
  • Is in a color that doesn’t suit you
  • Has a neckline or hem length that doesn’t suit you
  • Has negative memories or associations
  • Is tatty
  • Has been worn too many times
  • Is tragically out of fashion
  • Is not your style any more
  • Makes you feel uncomfortable or unhappy
  • Hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months.

Step 3: Do a second scan, left to right, for anything that needs repair, alteration or laundering. If you know you’ll never get around to the repair, alteration or dry cleaning, then pop these items straight into your first bag. Otherwise, put them aside for later attention.

Step 4: Put your bag by the door or take it straight out to the car. (Take it to the charity store or tip as soon as you can. Really good stuff should go to charity, but let junk go.)

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Notice what’s still in your closet – the styles, colors and shapes that suit you – and make a note to buy more if you need them.
  2. Notice what you’ve decided to ditch – the styles, colors and shapes that don’t work for you – and make a What Not To Wear list to avoid future fashion faux pas.
  3. Tidy your clothes and straighten your hangers.

Now aren’t you looking forward to getting dressed?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

I tackled the coat closet– we just had a big swing in the temperature so it was time to shift the in-season items to the centre.
As there are too many coats & jackets for increasingly rare trips to arctic climate locales & for sports no longer of interest, I filled a trio of bags for charity.
Thanks so much. I hadn’t thought much about the coat closet and had never implemented the habit I’ve established for the bedroom closet of putting a small piece of colored paper the hanger at the beginning of the season. As I wear an item I slip the paper marker off, making it easy to pluck out the items I have not worn recently when I want to straighten the closet and cull the give-aways. I find this is easier than turning the hangars around– and it prevents the cursing associated with tangled hangars!

My cousin’s gmail account is still doing nothing for her but “ooops” error messages and screen freezes. (I am sure it took her less than 2 min to be sure that her family’s closets resemble, as always, an advert for a closet organization company or a display in an expensive store.)

Done! I have definitely been hanging on to clothes that will fit me again…when I lose that 15 lbs. They are now gone!!!

  3. Jana says:

Done, I recently got rid a lot of clothes, thus it wasn’t all that difficult. But I still got rid of a couple of concert shirts that I was holding onto.

  4. Carolyn says:

I’ve done this fairly recently, but still found several more things to toss. And I’m now out of trash bags!

  5. Tracey says:

DONE! love purging! and re-organizing! I colour co-ordinated all my clothes! and I’m working on switching all my hangers over to wooden ones! just gives is a bit of something extra! LOVING the 30 day challenge!

  6. Lyne says:

Hanging part wasn’t the problem it’s the rest of the closet that’s a mess. Appreciate the motivation.

  7. Silvia says:

I had already got rid of quite a few things a couple of months ago so it wasn’t all that bad. still got rid of a couple of pants and a few more things. I have to change season clothes in a week so I ‘m sure I’ll have to get rid of some summer clothes which are yet not “hanging ” in my closet.
