30-Day Organize-athon | Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

30-Day Organize-athon 02

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-clear the hanging part of your closet.

Take a deep breath as you imagine inhaling a sense of clarity, freedom and order, and off we go!

Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

Step 1: Grab a large garbage bag.

Step 2: Open up the hanging part of your closet and, quickly scanning your clothes from left to right, toss into the bag anything that:

  • Doesn’t fit
  • Feels scratchy or unpleasant against your skin
  • Is in a shape that doesn’t suit you
  • Is in a color that doesn’t suit you
  • Has a neckline or hem length that doesn’t suit you
  • Has negative memories or associations
  • Is tatty
  • Has been worn too many times
  • Is tragically out of fashion
  • Is not your style any more
  • Makes you feel uncomfortable or unhappy
  • Hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months.

Step 3: Do a second scan, left to right, for anything that needs repair, alteration or laundering. If you know you’ll never get around to the repair, alteration or dry cleaning, then pop these items straight into your first bag. Otherwise, put them aside for later attention.

Step 4: Put your bag by the door or take it straight out to the car. (Take it to the charity store or tip as soon as you can. Really good stuff should go to charity, but let junk go.)

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Notice what’s still in your closet – the styles, colors and shapes that suit you – and make a note to buy more if you need them.
  2. Notice what you’ve decided to ditch – the styles, colors and shapes that don’t work for you – and make a What Not To Wear list to avoid future fashion faux pas.
  3. Tidy your clothes and straighten your hangers.

Now aren’t you looking forward to getting dressed?

This is a great challenge. Got my assignment and started right in. What a difference. Thanks!!!

  2. Joni says:

I’m a rebel. I went right to left. And, I’ve lost a lot of weight over the past year, so I’ve recently weeded my closet, but…..I was able to finally toss (put in the Salvation Army bag) 2 sweaters that I’ve been hanging on to, but don’t wear. One was given to me as a gift, but I never liked it….and the other is a color I never wear, but somehow I kept it just in case I needed something that color. (I know that doesn’t make sense, but I’ve held on to this sweater for 5 years for that reason!!)
Lovin’ this 5 minutes at a time thing!

  3. Cassie says:

This was the prompt I needed to do some painful culling. I was hanging on to things for sentimental value (and, um, in case they ever fit again). I have kept two skirts that pinch a bit, but they’re incredible skirts on me, and I’m working hard to tone my belly to eliminate that pinch. Sometimes it’s the clothes and sometimes it really is just me!

So my Goodwill bag is full and needs to go out to the car, I am looking to sell one gown on consignment, and I am going to donate one to my alma mater’s theatre department. Good day’s work. 🙂

  4. Margaret Sansom says:

I’m still in a hotel at a workshop; but as I was packing, I put in a number of items that I plan to leave in the hotel room. I always take old underwear that I toss before returning home.

  5. Musette says:

feeling lighter and energized. I still hearing my mom’s voice saying to “keep things”, but it is getting less as I toss more and more.

  6. Michelle Clark says:

Another chore done! I also went through our summer clothes thats been packed away 🙂 I cant believe how many clothes my hubby had that he didnt/couldnt wear anymore! Hes worse than most women! Looking forward to tomorrow!

  7. Lene says:

I have done it! Feels good to “have permission” to get rid of clothes that I just don´t like anymore, eventhough they still fit. They have just hung there and annoyed me everytime I´ve opened the closet. Now there is more space for new items for this season as well as it is easier to find the clothes I like to wear.

  8. Krissi says:

Suddenly living with a former Marine comes in handy (not that it doesn’t is other ways as well). Thanks to the OCD ingrained into him by the military our closet is always nice and organized. As for things that needed to be thrown out, we moved about six months ago and I cleared out then and haven’t added much since. So I used my five minutes to collect laundry to start the washer.

  9. Rob says:

This was easy. I keep nothing in my closet I don’t wear. I even had the extra five mins done because my other half has a list of my sizes and what I wear so I don’t have to go shopping with her as often.

  10. Anne says:

I like this one. I do this twice a year – Spring and Winter. I don’t have much closet space so I have to switch out warm clothes for cold weather clothes. Thanks for the reminder – it’s time again.
