Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!
In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-clear the hanging part of your closet.
Take a deep breath as you imagine inhaling a sense of clarity, freedom and order, and off we go!
Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet
Step 1: Grab a large garbage bag.
Step 2: Open up the hanging part of your closet and, quickly scanning your clothes from left to right, toss into the bag anything that:
- Doesn’t fit
- Feels scratchy or unpleasant against your skin
- Is in a shape that doesn’t suit you
- Is in a color that doesn’t suit you
- Has a neckline or hem length that doesn’t suit you
- Has negative memories or associations
- Is tatty
- Has been worn too many times
- Is tragically out of fashion
- Is not your style any more
- Makes you feel uncomfortable or unhappy
- Hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months.
Step 3: Do a second scan, left to right, for anything that needs repair, alteration or laundering. If you know you’ll never get around to the repair, alteration or dry cleaning, then pop these items straight into your first bag. Otherwise, put them aside for later attention.
Step 4: Put your bag by the door or take it straight out to the car. (Take it to the charity store or tip as soon as you can. Really good stuff should go to charity, but let junk go.)
And you’re done!
Got an Extra 5 Minutes?
- Notice what’s still in your closet – the styles, colors and shapes that suit you – and make a note to buy more if you need them.
- Notice what you’ve decided to ditch – the styles, colors and shapes that don’t work for you – and make a What Not To Wear list to avoid future fashion faux pas.
- Tidy your clothes and straighten your hangers.
Now aren’t you looking forward to getting dressed?

Day 2 done. Now my clothing can breathe. I even gave the closet a quick spritz of fabric freshener mmm sweet.
@ Marie S. Great idea with the coat hangers.
I’d recently done this, so it was easier this time around. Planning to take out a few more things on a third time through.
done!
I did this yesterday, and it was fairly easy as I had allready started doing this previously, But I also turned my hangers the opposite direction (even though it REALLY annoys me lol) so that in 6 months from now if it’s not seasonal and the hanger is still facing that way, I know I can donate it.
More to give away!
Done!
Oops forgot to post yesterday Day 2 done.
somewhat done. had to do different closet due to circumstances.
Yes! got there, now time to go shopping!!!!
I had just done this a few months ago when I moved….but it still took longer than 5 min.
This one took me awhile, and it is so worth it! Love my clean closet, now! 🙂
This one took more than five minutes, but that’s ok. Looks good!
DONE ~ First time in YEARS, feels so good! I’m amazed at how easy it is to decide what to wear now! I share a teeny-tiny closet with my DH. It was stuffed so tight I hated hanging things up. Now there’s lots of space and I can see everything. Got hubby’s clothes organized too. Even did the clothes in dresser drawers, and shoes! Best stuff went to the local women’s shelter, the rest to Goodwill.
Done. Drop off will have to wait until later in the week, but I purposely used a black garbage bag instead of a clear one – less chance of second-guessing my decisions.
Oops! Day 2…DONE!! =)
I did this yesterday but was exhausted after having a tree land in my yard so didn’t log back in! I had already started this project but this gave me the motivation to complete. However, I am not sure how any one was able to complete the whole task in 5 minutes!
Was up to date on this one, too. But only because I started this 2 months ago! Have two boxes for the consignment shop and a few things to be just tossed.
I was so beat last night. Forgot to get on and post my comment. Big job. Didn’t get to finish, but did get me started. It’s really great to get rid of stuff I haven’t worn in so long. I’m going to hit my husband’s closet as well. Thank you!
Our internet went out, so I couldn’t post yesterday, but I filled up a big bag of stuff just from our 6′ long standard closet. The bag is hanging around until our yard sale in May… but only because we have an expensive dog surgery to pay for and need all of the extra funds we can find!
