30-Day Organize-athon | Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

30-Day Organize-athon 02

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-clear the hanging part of your closet.

Take a deep breath as you imagine inhaling a sense of clarity, freedom and order, and off we go!

Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

Step 1: Grab a large garbage bag.

Step 2: Open up the hanging part of your closet and, quickly scanning your clothes from left to right, toss into the bag anything that:

  • Doesn’t fit
  • Feels scratchy or unpleasant against your skin
  • Is in a shape that doesn’t suit you
  • Is in a color that doesn’t suit you
  • Has a neckline or hem length that doesn’t suit you
  • Has negative memories or associations
  • Is tatty
  • Has been worn too many times
  • Is tragically out of fashion
  • Is not your style any more
  • Makes you feel uncomfortable or unhappy
  • Hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months.

Step 3: Do a second scan, left to right, for anything that needs repair, alteration or laundering. If you know you’ll never get around to the repair, alteration or dry cleaning, then pop these items straight into your first bag. Otherwise, put them aside for later attention.

Step 4: Put your bag by the door or take it straight out to the car. (Take it to the charity store or tip as soon as you can. Really good stuff should go to charity, but let junk go.)

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Notice what’s still in your closet – the styles, colors and shapes that suit you – and make a note to buy more if you need them.
  2. Notice what you’ve decided to ditch – the styles, colors and shapes that don’t work for you – and make a What Not To Wear list to avoid future fashion faux pas.
  3. Tidy your clothes and straighten your hangers.

Now aren’t you looking forward to getting dressed?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

Move fast. Don’t overthink. Let it go!

Day 2 all done. This is great, only problem is I’m getting the emails very late so having to do them on the following day! But it’s all good!

  2. Terry says:

Passed on 3 shirts and 1 pair of pants. Took 1 suit to the S.A.
Decided a long time ago to stick to khaki and green or brown.

    Continuing my quest!!

Is the tip same as charity store? referring back to yesterday’s comment and to the change in wording on blog today! See below:

Spent my 5 plus minutes in my closet- sorely needed and something I have been putting off because the task has seemed so overwhelming. Using the timer and working fast, it wasn’t near as bad as I had been anticipating! Feel as if I have a little “breathing room” in there now! Once I got started, late in the evening, it was hard for me to stop- it’s the middle of the night now and I finally decided to close it down and stop for the evening- I’ve got to go to sleep sometime!!

this took me a long time, but have been meaning to do it for ages, as I need to fit maternity clothes in there, so thank you!! I have a bag for the op shop, a bag to sell on ebay (just too good & I need the money), a bag to give to a girlfriend and a box of my favourites packed away for after bub 🙂

  6. Karalyn says:

Wow, this one is a bit confronting! If I toss out what I should there won’t be much left in there (except a drawer full of jeans – I love jeans!) So, what I did was kept the ones I loved, tossed the old well past their use by date ones and compromised with the rest. The so-so ones went and the not too bad ones stayed .. for now! Made a list of the not too bad ones then filled out my “clothes to buy” list and my “Clothes: Looking Good” and “Clothes: Feeling Good” lists. Now I am feeling good! and a bit more organised. Thanks Michele 🙂

    Me – Done.
DS – Done, huge bag of outgrown clothes ready to be passed on as hand me downs.
DD – Did hers a week or so ago just prior to going shopping for new season clothes to fit her.
DH – will nag him again, but as he never shops for new stuff and doesn’t encroach on my wardrobe space then I’m happy to leave him to his own devices!!
    Bring on tomorrow!!

  9. Natalie Daregr says:

Did it. Busy all day but I made sure I got this done late so I will still be in the running!

  10. Tiffany says:

Seems many can do something with their closet. Sadly mine wasnt so easy. In the process of losing my “baby” fat and dont wish to get rid of things just yet. Did find a couple of things for now. Guess that is better than nothing.
