30-Day Organize-athon | Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

30-Day Organize-athon 02

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-clear the hanging part of your closet.

Take a deep breath as you imagine inhaling a sense of clarity, freedom and order, and off we go!

Day 2: Clear Out Your Hanging Closet

Step 1: Grab a large garbage bag.

Step 2: Open up the hanging part of your closet and, quickly scanning your clothes from left to right, toss into the bag anything that:

  • Doesn’t fit
  • Feels scratchy or unpleasant against your skin
  • Is in a shape that doesn’t suit you
  • Is in a color that doesn’t suit you
  • Has a neckline or hem length that doesn’t suit you
  • Has negative memories or associations
  • Is tatty
  • Has been worn too many times
  • Is tragically out of fashion
  • Is not your style any more
  • Makes you feel uncomfortable or unhappy
  • Hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months.

Step 3: Do a second scan, left to right, for anything that needs repair, alteration or laundering. If you know you’ll never get around to the repair, alteration or dry cleaning, then pop these items straight into your first bag. Otherwise, put them aside for later attention.

Step 4: Put your bag by the door or take it straight out to the car. (Take it to the charity store or tip as soon as you can. Really good stuff should go to charity, but let junk go.)

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Notice what’s still in your closet – the styles, colors and shapes that suit you – and make a note to buy more if you need them.
  2. Notice what you’ve decided to ditch – the styles, colors and shapes that don’t work for you – and make a What Not To Wear list to avoid future fashion faux pas.
  3. Tidy your clothes and straighten your hangers.

Now aren’t you looking forward to getting dressed?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

This is my coment for day 1 as I did not get a chance to log on last night. Family and living room organized, even got the Christmas tree down!! On to day 2!

  2. Kimberly Cole says:

I haven’t hung up anything but coats in a long time because I’ve had a series of moves this past year, and as soon as I get everything hung up, I have to move again. So instead, I took out all the junk that gets tossed in the coat closet, got rid of everything we didn’t need or didn’t belong in there, found new homes for stuff that needed new homes and…wow…I found three books that I bought six months ago and haven’t read yet…wondered where those went…

  3. Tina Eiser says:

I filled 3 bags and they are in my car as I type this so that I don’t get tempted to change my mind by looking through then again!

  4. Debra Stanley says:

Tonights was very easy to do and required virtually no effort as if it required effort i would have failed miserably after being at the show all day

We recently had floods and a lot of people said they needed big people clothes so i cleaned my wardrobe the way you said and donated 4 garbage bags of clothes to the flood survivors and 2 bags of the MOTH’s clothes that He had grow out of

I only had in there clothes that i now wear all the time rather than clothes that wasted hanging space

Anything that i didnt like didnt fit or just didnt want went in that bag
It was hard but i felt so good afterwards and a lot of larger ladies got clothes too

A few items i wasn’t sure of so i hung them on my curtain rod to make me look at them every day Guess what decided i really didn’t like seeing them every day so off they went as well all bar one pair of pants that stayed a little bit longer and then said goodbye to them too Made me realise i had left them out for a reason.

Thanks for a easy task tonight

    Luv Deb

  5. Radiant Heart says:

Wow! I didn’t think I had that many clothes I wear out of convenience or colour rather than love! ! I have so many clothes that have been hangining around waiting for a home that this task will take me the rest of the day so I will come back when I’m done …..Thank GOD the teacher appears when the student is ready ….YAY !

  6. Cathy says:

Done – I did this thoroughly at the start of summer with my winter clothes now the end of summer stuff has gone too

  7. Jamie says:

Awesomely done, I’ve needed to do this for ages! I guess getting up at 4 am on a Saturday has some good things!

  8. susan says:

finally parted with dear daughters prom dresses ..she is getting married in two months, it is TIME! loL! gave them to a local consignment shop that sells them for money for the YWCA.. closet it DONE!

  9. Stephanie says:

Love this! I purged and renovated my closet about three months ago. I have very little clothing in there because I’m committed to keeping only what I need and is appropriate for my age/body type!

  10. Nina says:

Not much left hanging there now, but at least i’ll no longer be ‘tragically out of fashion’ hahaha!

  11. Tracey says:

This was a quick one for me! I had just done this a month ago when I moved. I am amazed at how much more I was able to get rid of!

  12. Cathie says:

Day 2 – Our closet was already done, was happy to take 5 bags to local clothes drop but, finally put my mind to that coat hall closet, DONE!!! Yeah.

  13. Salena says:

unfortunately, I don’t have anything to go through. If I did, I would toss out everything and I would have nothing to wear. =( When I get the money to re-do my wardrobe, I will do this step. My baby is 17 months old but I still only have nursing clothes and altered maternity clothes in my closet. All which are ill fitting and unflattering.
