Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!
In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-declutter the kids’ toys.
Inhale: clarity, freedom, order. We’re gonna need it!
Day 17: Declutter The Kids’ Toys
Note: Decide on the extent to which you need to consult/involve the kids. This will depend on their ages and your family style.
Step 1: Grab a large bag or box. Depending on which option you choose in Step 3, you may need additional boxes/bags.
Step 2: Gather all the kids’ toys into one location. (If this alone takes more than 5 minutes it doesn’t count!)
Choose one of the following options:
Option A
Step 3: Quickly going through the collection, toss into the bag/box any toys that:
- Your kids have outgrown
- Are broken or dangerous
- Have been divested of batteries because they’re so annoying
- Are in poor condition
- Are doubles.
Step 4: Extract any toys that are safe and in good condition for a charity bag. Toss the rest.
Option B
Step 3: Give each child a large bag/box and ask them to fill it up with their favorite toys – the ones they want to keep. Explain that the rest can be given to kids who don’t have so many toys and would really love some more. (This may take more than 5 minutes, but perhaps you can go do something else while the kids ponder their collections?)
Step 4: Of the remaining toys, extract any that are safe and in good condition for a charity bag. Toss the rest.
And you’re done!
Got an Extra 5 Minutes?
Check your own toy collection (um, please keep comments G-rated for this blog ) for:
- Ancient, out-of-date or falling-apart board games
- Surplus packs of playing cards
- Previous versions of games consoles
- Computer/video games no one plays anymore.
Now won’t everyone have more fun with the good stuff that’s left?

no kids home, but i did cleanup the cat toys!
My children are grown and gone — but I do have a stash of toys for the grandchldren. Went through each and every one — and threw away quite a lot. Good feeling.
No children in the home. Nothing to do on this one.
This 5-minute challenge came at the right time because I had scheduled the toy room on my organizing list. It’s already past the 5 minute mark but I knew that going in!
Done and goodness my kids are SPOILED!!
did this one.
Because of being gone yesterday, had to do this one today along with Day 18. No problem, got it done! Of course it helps I am at the grandma stage and only had their toys to organize. Lightning Lucas does know how to mess things up but I found all the pieces and they are back in their respective packages!
Done. Moving right along. This is coming in handy to help me get organized before the new baby gets here! Thanks
Don’t have kids, but I wanted to do something, so I decluttered my handcraft accessories 😉
I can’t remember if I commented on this yesterday, but I can’t find it so….I went through the Barbies and tossed the headless/limbless ones. Done!
no more little kids toys. did work on big kids and parents bookshelf again. all done.
Done!! Nothing like school holidays to take the time to spend on this task. Everthing sorted and ready for carboot sale!
Woo hoo .. easy task .. no kids & no toys 🙂
Toys sorted out 🙂
Done! Well, I actually did this a few weeks ago to donate toys to our church’s youth group garage sale. Now all her toys have a specific place and even better, they are all in built-in cabinets in her room so no toy box or toys on the floor.
Well, that would be the grandkids’ toys thank you very much you don’t look old enough to be a grandma but I am.
We sorted out quite a few toys not too long ago. Found one today that did not work so pitched it, too. The toy corner looks nice now!
“Another one bites the dust!”
I find myself singing this as I’m doing my challenge job these days 😮
Done
done
Had to stretch the definition of toys a bit for the two teenagers, but done!
