30-Day Organize-athon 17

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-declutter the kids’ toys.

Inhale: clarity, freedom, order. We’re gonna need it!

Day 17: Declutter The Kids’ Toys

Note: Decide on the extent to which you need to consult/involve the kids. This will depend on their ages and your family style.

Step 1: Grab a large bag or box. Depending on which option you choose in Step 3, you may need additional boxes/bags.

Step 2: Gather all the kids’ toys into one location. (If this alone takes more than 5 minutes it doesn’t count!)

Choose one of the following options:

Option A

Step 3: Quickly going through the collection, toss into the bag/box any toys that:

  • Your kids have outgrown
  • Are broken or dangerous
  • Have been divested of batteries because they’re so annoying
  • Are in poor condition
  • Are doubles.

Step 4: Extract any toys that are safe and in good condition for a charity bag. Toss the rest.

Option B

Step 3: Give each child a large bag/box and ask them to fill it up with their favorite toys –  the ones they want to keep. Explain that the rest can be given to kids who don’t have so many toys and would really love some more. (This may take more than 5 minutes, but perhaps you can go do something else while the kids ponder their collections?)

Step 4: Of the remaining toys, extract any that are safe and in good condition for a charity bag. Toss the rest.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

Check your own toy collection (um, please keep comments G-rated for this blog Smile) for:

  • Ancient, out-of-date or falling-apart board games
  • Surplus packs of playing cards
  • Previous versions of games consoles
  • Computer/video games no one plays anymore.

Now won’t everyone have more fun with the good stuff that’s left?

Did this recently as part of Project Simplify, and the outgrown, annoying and not in my kids interest toys have left the house yesterday with my friend who has a kindergarten. So many happy kids!

Now I made a list of toys or kid stuff that we need, so we know what to say when someone asks for a gift suggestion… 🙂 (50pcs puzzle, knee and elbow protectors, dress up costume of firefighter…)

  2. Tracey says:

Done! easy enough as we don’t have kids yet so I went through mine and my husbands old toys and went through which ones were special that we wanted to pass on to our own one day and which ones could be tossed or donated!

  3. Sarah says:

Well, I’m being induced with my first tomorrow, but she has cats for older siblings and I should probably go through their toys 🙂

  4. Megan says:

This is one that has needed to be done and it finally is!! Woohoo! Our small town is having a citywide garage sale so this helped me get started sooner! 🙂

  5. JRA in CO says:

Kinda started this one when we started on the garage – yes, the toys are in the garage! Will be continuing this one for many days to come, but look forward to it’s completion!!

  6. Theresa J says:

No kids young enough to play with toys, we did declutter the big kids toys though, all games in good condition and they are family favorites that are played regularly.

  7. Miriam B. says:

No kids! And the games are pretty up to date. Will put some stuff online – which will take more than 5 min. This weeks price sounds great. If I don’t win, I think I’ll have to buy it… 🙂

  8. Cindy says:

Today’s the day! We have 2 PS3’s, a new xbox Kinect AND a Wii… my daughter agreed months ago that if we didn’t play the Wii, it could be sold back to the store and she could keep the money for her bank. Thanks to this 5-minute declutter… we are off to the game store to turn in old system and games. DONE! =)
