30-Day Organize-athon | Day 10: Organize Your Garage

30-Day Organize-athon 10

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your garage (yes, I’m serious!).

Remember: clarity, freedom, and order. Let’s begin.

Day 10: Organize Your Garage

Step 1: Get a large box or bag (you may need several). Quickly scan your garage and toss into your box/bag any:

  • Junk
  • Outgrown toys and clothes (if sorting through boxes for donate-able items is an obstacle to getting it done, then simply toss it all)
  • Ancient seasonal items, holiday decorations, etc
  • Rusty or broken tools
  • Rusty or broken gardening implements
  • Rusty or broken garden furniture
  • Prehistoric gardening supplies
  • Memorabilia (unless it’s genuinely meaningful to you – and if it’s been gathering dust out here for decades, then let’s be honest, it probably isn’t)
  • Stuff from when you last moved that’s never been unpacked (if you haven’t opened it you don’t need it)
  • Notes and books from school, college, etc
  • Accoutrement for abandoned hobbies, sports and interests (if you take it up again, buy what you need afresh; it will cost you less overall when you take stress, clutter and mental clarity into account)
  • Anything you haven’t used in the past 12 months.

Step 2:  Pop your boxes/bags into the trash or take them the car for a trip to the tip.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Consider whether you want to install shelving, hooks, etc, to better organize your garage space.
  2. Make a note to buy shelves, hooks, and supplies, and/or or to contact a handyman.

Now isn’t that a beautiful thing?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

Move fast. Don’t overthink. Let it go!

Start the 5-minute timer now.

Ughhh…this was an ugly one! 🙂 I can only think of one other place uglier than this in our house. I hope it doesn’t make your list of things to do! HAHA!!! 🙂

  2. Debra Page says:

We don’t have a garage. we have a 20 x 24 ft shed. No we didn’t get it cleaned. But, we did make quite a dent in it and some room for our feet to walk.

took much longer than 5 minutes but since it was the weekend spent most of the day outthere organizing…was too tired to even post this last nite, but its done!

  4. Ann-Marie says:

We don’t have a garage, so I tackled our under the stairs storage room and our backyard. Didn’t take long at all. I even got all my seeds and bulbs ready in case the weather ever decides to stay warm in our area.

  5. Julie says:

DIdn’t do this till today, as Sunday is a day of rest at our home.
Since we’ve recently done this in our garage, it wasn’t too overwhelming– found a couple of old training wheels and bike pads to throw out, other than that, not much. As a result, I decided to clean out the 2 deep freezes we have out there. Now THAT was a lot of old food to get rid of. Wish the garbage man was coming today…..

  6. Courtney says:

Been doing this the past couple of weeks. Garage sale soon so when that happens the garage will be complete.

  7. Leanne says:

This is the hardest yet — lots of delayed decision making in the garage plus items that are difficult to categorize. I’ve started making a list of expanded 5 minute sorts that should be at least a day, and will try and tackle them next month or before if there’s time. The 5 minute exercise is a great way to get started on something though.

  8. Annette says:

I am in the same situation as some of you who can only make a dent in 5 minutes. I’ve just completed 2 years of college with full loads of credit hours; set backs with health issues kept me from cleaning. I would just put things where there was any space. I’ll admit I’m not an organized person, but these challenges are helping give me a jump start and getting me motivated to at least get started in these areas. I usually spend longer than 5 minutes, so I can see some accomplishment. Will have to find time later to do a more through job.

  9. Annette says:

No garage…just a carport. It has to serve as a space for grill, lawn chairs, and a few outside toys. Decided to toss old lawn chairs and buy a new ones.

We’ve been working on our garage on a weekend by weekend basis. We’re getting ready for a rummage sale, so all the boxes in there right now are filled with rummage sale stuff…all the tubs have winter clothing that is for next year…then there’s my hubby’s stuff and, well, I don’t want to go through those boxes again, mostly collectable things that he has. so I think our garage can be marked as ‘done’ until we clean the floor for the rummage sale…

  11. Candy says:

WOW! This one was most difficult tasks. It is not 100% completed to what I would like but did get rid of some stuff we have had for years for no reason!

  12. Susan Saunders says:

I spent over an hour on that task yesterday.. We have a two-car garage that is used for storage (since we live in Florida and have no basement storage and very little in the attic). Anyway, I got a lot accomplished, but it is by no means finished. My goal, however, is to get my car in there within two weeks.

  13. Jocelyn says:

We had a garage sale as well and this definitely helped the situation down there. Got a bunch of things ready for ebay today. So done until the biddings over.
