30-Day Organize-athon | Day 10: Organize Your Garage

30-Day Organize-athon 10

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your garage (yes, I’m serious!).

Remember: clarity, freedom, and order. Let’s begin.

Day 10: Organize Your Garage

Step 1: Get a large box or bag (you may need several). Quickly scan your garage and toss into your box/bag any:

  • Junk
  • Outgrown toys and clothes (if sorting through boxes for donate-able items is an obstacle to getting it done, then simply toss it all)
  • Ancient seasonal items, holiday decorations, etc
  • Rusty or broken tools
  • Rusty or broken gardening implements
  • Rusty or broken garden furniture
  • Prehistoric gardening supplies
  • Memorabilia (unless it’s genuinely meaningful to you – and if it’s been gathering dust out here for decades, then let’s be honest, it probably isn’t)
  • Stuff from when you last moved that’s never been unpacked (if you haven’t opened it you don’t need it)
  • Notes and books from school, college, etc
  • Accoutrement for abandoned hobbies, sports and interests (if you take it up again, buy what you need afresh; it will cost you less overall when you take stress, clutter and mental clarity into account)
  • Anything you haven’t used in the past 12 months.

Step 2:  Pop your boxes/bags into the trash or take them the car for a trip to the tip.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Consider whether you want to install shelving, hooks, etc, to better organize your garage space.
  2. Make a note to buy shelves, hooks, and supplies, and/or or to contact a handyman.

Now isn’t that a beautiful thing?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

Move fast. Don’t overthink. Let it go!

Start the 5-minute timer now.

Garage was okay. But I swapped some of the storage boxes for see- through boxes instead. All the tasks I do for much more than 5 minutes. None of my tasks could be done in that time but I want to do all the tasks in some form and so far, so good.

I need way more than 5 minutes for this, but I got a jump start. Got rid of outdoors stuff we can’t use…torn up chair cushions and other random things. Love getting rid of stuff…wish I had more time to work on all of this! I love organization and crave more! Bring on day 11.

I completely agree that these tasks could take way longer than 5 min and it does feel overwhelming! To limit my feeling like a failure, I simply set the timer for 5 min and whatever I get done is just that. Cleaning out the garage is a much larger project that my husband and I are planning to do when we can set aside a weekend. For now, I grabbed a bag and filled it with some items that needed to be thrown out. And then took a quick scan of my car to remove items and garbage that kids left in the car. A little goes a long way, right?

My extent of “garage duty” is to park my vehicle no further than the hanging tennis ball. And I do this well.

I mentioned today’s assignment to my husband. He had already been working on the garage — mainly to get his motorcycle out!

So, between the two of us, this is “done”. 🙂

  5. Raleigh says:

When this came through last night (Sunday night in Australia) I thought that I would take the dismantled swing set that has sat in my side of the garage since cyclone Yasi, and put it back up. Hubby said “NO!!!!” because I might scratch his pride and joy while he is at work 🙁

So I washed my car instead :o) AND the letter box got a bath as well LOL

  6. Danielle says:

Good thing it finally warmed up here in MI. This was on our list to do together today. It isn’t “done” by any stretch of the imagination, but at least all the empty boxes that we don’t need are cut down and ready to go to the dumpster and the car top carrier is up.

  7. Amy J says:

This is going to take WAY longer than 5 minutes. We managed to get all of the old boxes prepped to take to the curb this week. We may have done more on this today, but it’s currently 85-degrees and sunny…and is forecasting rain and cooler weather the rest of the week. More of this will be taking place when the weather is not so cooperative!

  8. Amie says:

Okay, I spent 5 minutes with my garbage bag and cleaned only one shelf off in my garage. That’s at least one shelf that’s no longer filled with useless junk that I don’t need. Now, if I could only stop time and take a week to get the rest of my 3 car garage done! Thank you!

garage–it’s enough to make me weep BUT I did put in an hour pulling out things which will go to a charity that sent out a call for donations of clothes and furniture. They will pick up on Monday & I did promise them something–now it will be lots more than I promised.

AND I found paint cans I can take to the recycle/hazard waste disposal along with the curly bulbs & dead batteries that I’ve collected in the past 6 months or so That collection is scheduled for Saturday next.

  10. Ruth says:

Fortunately my husband had time to help with a lot of the work in the garage today. We filled a few bags, and although there’s more to go, it’s looking better.
