30-Day Organize-athon | Day 10: Organize Your Garage

30-Day Organize-athon 10

Welcome to the 30-Day Organize-athon!

In today’s 5 minutes we’re going to express-organize your garage (yes, I’m serious!).

Remember: clarity, freedom, and order. Let’s begin.

Day 10: Organize Your Garage

Step 1: Get a large box or bag (you may need several). Quickly scan your garage and toss into your box/bag any:

  • Junk
  • Outgrown toys and clothes (if sorting through boxes for donate-able items is an obstacle to getting it done, then simply toss it all)
  • Ancient seasonal items, holiday decorations, etc
  • Rusty or broken tools
  • Rusty or broken gardening implements
  • Rusty or broken garden furniture
  • Prehistoric gardening supplies
  • Memorabilia (unless it’s genuinely meaningful to you – and if it’s been gathering dust out here for decades, then let’s be honest, it probably isn’t)
  • Stuff from when you last moved that’s never been unpacked (if you haven’t opened it you don’t need it)
  • Notes and books from school, college, etc
  • Accoutrement for abandoned hobbies, sports and interests (if you take it up again, buy what you need afresh; it will cost you less overall when you take stress, clutter and mental clarity into account)
  • Anything you haven’t used in the past 12 months.

Step 2:  Pop your boxes/bags into the trash or take them the car for a trip to the tip.

And you’re done!

Got an Extra 5 Minutes?

  1. Consider whether you want to install shelving, hooks, etc, to better organize your garage space.
  2. Make a note to buy shelves, hooks, and supplies, and/or or to contact a handyman.

Now isn’t that a beautiful thing?

The 30-Day Organize-athon Mantra

Move fast. Don’t overthink. Let it go!

Start the 5-minute timer now.

Garage is off limits for me also. Hoping that when the rest of the house is in good shape hubby will want to do his area too. So I did some things in the basement instead which is where the clothing and household things are thrown that we don’t want anymore. Took a bag of clothes and two boxes out to the car to donate tomorrow when I’m out.

Done – did this before winter, and kept it tidy. We identified the hazardous waste to dispose of at the end of the month, put away the snow rake, picked up the trash that had blown in over winter and got buried in snow. Then I raked up leaves that the snow plow had pushed up onto the lawn. I did so much more than that today, these short tasks have been so motivating.

We don´t have a garage, but we do have a basement containing the stuff mentioned. I´m sure it would take me a week to get it the way it should be, but at least I got 30 min done of tidying up and that´s a good start. And I have decided to make a plan on how to tackle the rest….

Oh my word! I had been collecting architectural artifacts so I could make one of those Folly garden houses ~ well, last weekend I had a young couple go through the garage and take out and buy whatever they wanted for their booming fashionable junk market. They paid me a nice amount and they carted away a trailer full of stuff!

I still have more to take out but steadily I’m gaining space in the garage.

5 minutes done. My garage is a mess. So I will be doing 5 + minutes on a daily basis for a while. but it will get done. This has motivated me.

  6. Michelle Clark says:

You trying to get me killed??? LOL….My husband has now banned me from the garage because I threw away a bunch of nasty cardboard! Ha! But thats ok….I did get ONE thing done! 🙂

  7. Joni says:

This was a tough one because 1) the garage is not my ‘domain’, and 2) hubby is out of town….so I don’t want to ‘disturb’ anything. However, I was able to tidy up a few things, and I had some boxes/bags of stuff queued up for the Salvation Army which I put into the back of my car to take on my next trip out (it’s only a couple miles down the street)
    🙂
