2 hanging closets done and clothes either donated or thrown away.
Our group responses are: Mark five boxes/bins: alterations; donate; trash; repurpose; recycle. Keep good clothes return to your closet.
Alterations: hems; neckline
Donate: clothes that don’t fit; the shape doesn’t look good on you; colors you can’t wear; styles that don’t look good on you, Donate to your local chairity, friend or family member.
Out of fashion: if you look good in it keep wearing the outfit/set your own style
Recycle:
Repurpose: buttons; lace; zippers. Use different accessories in different colors to recreate an old outfit. Cut fabric into squares to make quilts or cut into rags.
Sell at resale shop: clothes in good and clean condition. What doesn’t fit or look good on you may look good on someone else.
Trash: fabrics that make you itch; wedding dress after a divorce or a traumatic event; tatty and beyond use
I got rid of a big bag of clothes and just picked up about 20 new items of clothes that I love!! color can make you or break you.
I researched what colors look best with my coloring and going to shop for those colors.
I did this exercise in Simplify your life and got rid of a lot. This time- I got rid of another big trash bag and filled it up with anything I didn’t wear in the past 12 months- now I have nothing left. Time to go thrift shopping because I seriously are left with very little. I then went onto pinterest to see what my style is so I can pull it up the style I like when I got shopping.
My group responses are:
How do you know what belongs on your personal ‘What Not to Wear’ list? Try things on in front of a full-length mirror. Or mix a batch of cocktails and invite some honest-but-kind friends over for their advice.
Don’t worry about individual pieces that fail you here. Rather, be on the lookout for patterns – entire classes of fabric, color, shape or style that you can drop altogether from your personal style repertoire.
Think about:
• Outfits that get you compliments – and ones that never do
• Things you try on and discard every time
• Fabrics that feel uncomfortable on your skin pitch it
• Fabrics that never seem to fall right on your frame pass it on or pitch it
• Shapes that make you look too short/tall/chubby/skinny/boyish/voluptuous [for females only], etc. pass it on or pitch it
• Hem lengths that don’t flatter your legs (TIP: A hem that falls to the widest part of your calf can make legs look chunky) we like long skirts
• Necklines that look dowdy (TIP: A high neck on a large bust can be unkind)
• Colors that make you look yellow, or red, or as though you’re about to faint
• Strap sizes that don’t suit your shoulders (TIP: spaghetti straps can exaggerate broad shoulders) thick straps
• Fit – either too baggy or sausage-skin. Michele: What is sausage-skin? Are you talking about skin tight? Are you talking about the fitting of the clothing?
Please stay accountable. Terry
My group responses are:
Step 2: Open up the hanging part of your closet and, quickly scanning your clothes from left to right, toss into the bag anything that:
• Doesn’t fit Size can change or fluctuate so be careful when you downsize
• Feels scratchy or unpleasant against your skin if you’re allergic to wool do not wear it. However, if a particular fabric scratches you we would toss it.
• Is in a shape that doesn’t suit you wear an outfit that complements your body. Determine what clothes you look good in.
• Is in a color that doesn’t suit you determine what colors looks good on you. Red, navy blue, black, sky blue, white and yellow
• Has a neckline or hem length that doesn’t suit you necklines that agree with us are: v neckline, round neckline, scoop neckline. Doesn’t look good is low cut and turtle neck sweaters.
• Has a negative memory or associations receiving a gift of clothing that doesn’t work for you can be passed on.
• Is tatty and beyond repair = pitch it
• Has been worn too many times if it still has use in it pass it on. Or if the fabric is totally worn out.
• Is tragically out of fashion if the fashion looks good on us we would keep it. Fashions will come back.
• Is not your style any more wearing the styles that complement you! Styles do come back.
• Makes you feel uncomfortable or unhappy if it’s uncomfortable pass it on or toss it.
• Hasn’t been worn in the past 12 months. Pass it on and let somebody else get some wear out of it.
Step 3: Do a second scan, left to right, for anything that needs repair alteration or laundering. If you know you’ll never get around to the repair, alteration or dry cleaning, and then pop these items straight into your first bag. Otherwise, put them aside for later attention. Continued success and stay accountable Terry
Ok so I am trying to play catch up today a bit. I have opted to clear out the hanging space in the coat cupboard nearest our front door. Well it is high summer here in the UK! I now have nice piles for : washing, dry cleaning, returning to other houses, shed (yes! Don’t ask!). I am now going to spend the day persuading the man in my life that you don’t have to wait until a coat literally falls off your shoulders, and we have a lovely refuse collection service!
I did two coat closets and a very quick pass through my closet. I loved that I only needed to focus on hanging things! Good sized bag for women’s shelter and a resale shop for nicer things.
Did my closet today. I’m behind already 😛
I discovered new old clothes that still fit that I had no idea were in my closet. I have a new wardrobe. And I threw quite a few clothes in the box for charity as well. I feel much litter.
I did however catch up on all of my laundry!!
10 minutes and got rid of some clothes but my closet is still a huge mess and needs a lot of work!!
I didn’t get to this today 🙁 I have a big paper due tonight and I’m still working. I did, however clear out the kids’ closet yesterday. I have a big bag of clothes to get rid of. I need to remember to put it in the car and take it away!
Pulled out a rubbish bag of clothes… still plenty more to do, but that’s what next month is for, right? 😉 My problem is organizing my closet in a useable way without cluttering it in the process. As a mom to little kids, I don’t wear the same clothes around the house as I do going out… and the in and out process can more often than not be at least two to three times a day usually after meals when kids love to get messy hands and hug mommy! If I don’t want to look like a slovenly housewife I change clothes as soon as I’m home!!! I’m starting to see the wisdom in June Cleaver’s (From “Leave It to Beaver” 50’s television show) apron…

I did this when I moved my summer clothing back into my closet. Last summer I was ill and lost alot of weight so I had alot of clothes that were too big, but instead of getting rid of them I created a storage box. I started regaining the weight and will probably be needing them again. However, as I grow out of the smaller sizes they will probably go to charity.
