Welcome to Day 4 of 14 Days to an Organized Closet.
Today’s task will take 15-30 minutes.
Yesterday we decluttered and organized our dresses.
Today we’ll continue with the hanging part of your closet and repeat yesterday’s process with your blouses, shirts, and fancy tops.
Let’s start…
If you’re signed up and logged in then today’s task will appear below.

I have 2 black bags of tops for the op shop and the rest that I am keeping all hanging neatly on the rails, feels good!
I’ve been playing catch-up this morning and have completed days 2 – 4. At this point, I LOVE my closet!
Revisiting….got rid of tops, a few more to go
Ok, finished this one… From 44 to 24 pieces, not bad… i am not counting my work shirts, that’ll be for another day. I have to make sure all these bags get out of the hous though That’ll really clear things up.
Ooooh gosh, I have so many of those, not sure I will have the courage to catch up on this task today, after just doing my dresses
Done! Never thought about organizing my tops in any order. I see the logic of it. Looking forward to more quickly chosing what to wear.
planning an extended trip, so this is a great time to try on tops and weed out those I don’t really love.
I have been ruthless with my hanging tops – if they don’t fit well then out they went (even though some had never been worn and some I simply adored), but there you go – what’s the point if I’m not wearing them? I now have a neat rail of tunic (longer) tops, floaty tops, smart work shirts and casual tops – it’s still about a metre of rail, but at least 2 bags of tops went to the charity shop.
Done – I am more of a dress wearer than a tops and bottoms wearer so this was fairly easy. I do have a lot of cardigans for wearing around the flat (I live in a chilly 1930s flat in England so cardis are essential wear!) – I might have a purge of these…
My group decisions are:
Too big – Consider altering your clothes to fit if your finances allow this.
Too small – we recommend purchasing elastic waist outfits as it will fluctuate with your weight—this will keep your clothing costs down.
Doesn’t suit you – Wear the style[s] and colors that look good on you.
Uncomfortable – Sell at consignment shop, donate or give away.
Tatty, ancient, dated — Discard tatty clothes. Ancient = family heirloom i.e. wedding dress you may wish to pass it on. Dated = high school in time donate to school for displays of your graduation time period.
Bad memories – If an outfit reminds you of bad memories let it go.
Not worn in past 12 months – Let it go. If new use for a gift at birthday or Xmas.
Organize Your Hanging Tops – Categories: best, most wearable blouses, shirts [button down, t-shirts or sweatshirts], and fancy tops in your closet.
My group has decided the following:
Too big – i.e. consider cutting up for cleaning rags or in squares for quilting depending on the fabric. Remove buttons and place in glass jar. Buttons can be used for craft projects, etc. Consider altering your clothes to fit if your finances allow this.
Too small – we recommend purchasing elastic waist outfits as it will fluctuate with your weight—this will keep your clothing costs down.
Doesn’t suit you – Wear the style that looks good on you. Don’t worry about fashion trends.
Uncomfortable – Sell at consignment shop or give away.
Tatty, ancient, dated — Discard tatty clothes. Ancient = family heirloom i.e. wedding dress, etc. Dated = high school in time donate to school for displays of your graduation time period.
Bad memories – If an outfit reminds you of bad memories by all means let it go or try accessorizing to take the bad memories away or if possible dye the outfit to another color. Or sell at consignment shop or give away.
Not worn in past 12 months – Let it go. If new use for a gift at birthday or Xmas.
Organize Your Hanging Tops – Categories: best, most wearable blouses, shirts, and fancy tops, sweatshirts in your closet.
DONE! I took all my hangers & turned them backwards & what I don’t wear in the next year GOES!
Great Idea!!!!!!
I seen that too:)
Awesome organizing idea!
It’s a good strategy Ritcha, but you could also ask yourself what you’ve not worn in the PAST 12 months. Letting that stuff go opens up your closet and your life for you to enjoy the best things you have, now.
My tops are now more organized, and I finally forced myself to add a few to the “donate” pile that I’d been resisting, but have known for a while that where they belong…

Good decision Catherine! It’s very freeing to let those things go. 🙂
Tops done and they look lovely all in order!
Fabulous Natalie! 🙂
Slowly Catching up… all done.
Nice work Melissa! 🙂
Tops purged and sorted. Will take me a little time to get used to the new system, but loving the overall result!
It will be easier to keep your closet organized this way. 🙂

Where should I put long tunic tops, with dresses or tops? I wear them with pants skirts or tights. I guess with hanging tops.
What a dilemma.
If you wear them as tops then keep them with your tops Catherine. It will help when you put outfits together. 🙂
Whew! Finished!
Well done Julianne! 🙂
