Welcome to Day 3 of 14 Days to an Organized Closet.
Today’s task will take 15-30 minutes.
Yesterday we re-organized our closets to make the best use of different kinds of space.
Today we’ll begin to focus on specific closet areas. We’ll start on some of the clothes in the hanging part of your closet – your dresses.
I think you’re going to enjoy this!
Let’s begin…

Part of the wardrobe/style that I want is one that makes me feel more feminine (being always in trousers out of habit/comfort), so I have found sorting dresses quite difficult, as I am not sure if I am being ruthless enough with my decisions. I don’t own that many (as I don’t wear them regularly), so I have kept 3 formal (office), 2 evening and 10 Summer/Autumn, only ditching 3 (on the basis of size/style). Am I doing this right?
I made 2 girlfriends very happy with some of my dresses that didn’t fit me but were favorites, they were in my closet for…. Believe it or not… Maybe 20 years?
Same here i like dresses but don’t wear them enough.
i got rid of over half of them many way too small, some summer dresses are folded in the empty suitcase ready to go for my next AZ trip, were I do use them. i have used Peter Walsh’s trick and have put all the hangers backwards, after using them I will hang them with the hanger forward then bij end of each season or in 12 months I can get rid of all the ones that I have not used.
my comment got lost in space, so will add one now. I only own 2 presentable dresses and have no need to wear them except on rare occasion. So I only focused on the dresses and did not stray to other sections of the closet. That is always my problem, I bite off more that I can chew and then too many things get pulled out and I end of frustrated at the end of the day. Less stress on day 3..Yea!!!
Today was easy. I only have 8 dresses and I love everyone of them, they all suit me and make me feel great. Realized most are summery…will be on the look out for more dresses and those I can wear during the winter. One dress had a stain; decided the only way to keep it was to clean it. Stain came out and its a keeper. Looking forward to tomorrow.
I also have very few dresses. I do have one I did buy online- I should try it on and decide to keep or return based on how it makes me feel.
If I am really honest with myself I rarely wear dresses. I like them, although don’t find them too comfortable to wear in the summer which is the ideal time to do so. As I wear them so rarely it always draws comments which I don’t like attracting, so it’s a catch 22. That being said, apart from one little dress which is a good memory for me, I now have a small set of summer dresses (6), 2 evening dresses and 4 work dresses. That seems reasonable to me – but maybe that is too much? Not sure?
I sort of had this system in place but going through everything was a very good exercise. I have THROWN AWAY a very lovely vintage dress that I know my boyfriend likes because it would have required hours of mending and I just know I will never get around to it. I will keep my eyes peeled for something similar to replace it. As I wear a lot of vintage clothes it does seem harder to decide that something has had its day.
But I have done it, thrown away one other item that was tatty, made up a second charity shop bag and found a very lovely 1960s black velvet dress I had forgotten all about.
I will wear that on my birthday – saving me money as I would probably have gone out and bought something new if I hadn’t found that! Yipeee! This is good fun.
We recommend you clean your closets bi-yearly, quarterly or seasonal. Choose which one is best for you.
Men: Organize your shoes, shirts, pants and suits.
Well than didn’t take long… most of my dresses are summery/sun dresses which are stored away for the time being. But trying to catch up tonight… been out of commission battling a bad cold for the past few days 🙁
Hope you feel better soon Catherine!
Okay. That took about 3 minutes. I only have 4 dresses that survived the original purge.
Wow. Ruthless you are! This is fantastic Michele Connolly – well done x.
Thank you Alexx. 🙂 Ruthless today = clutter-free and happy tomorrow!
This took me no time as I have about 6 dresses.
I think this is the easiest day Melissa – we need it after days #1 and #2!
All done! This section much more functional, neat and fun to pick a dress out from! Particularly given it’s summer over here!
‘Functional, neat and fun’ – I think they’re about the best three adjectives I’d want to apply to my closet. Great job, Vesna! 🙂
No Day 4 yet? 6.50am Aussie time.
I had to clear out dresses I never wear to even remember the ones that are gorgeous and flattering! This feels amazing!
That’s what I love about this exercise Julianne – we discover the cool things we already have!
Already had this done but am in need of other pieces/accessories to go with the dresses.
Sounds like your closet is in pretty good shape Tami.
Given that I so infrequently wear dresses anymore – this was the easiest step of all. Now I can get caught up on the other two steps for the balance of the day. Thanks Michele!
Good thinking Pat. Days 1 and 2 are pretty challenging so I like to make Day 3 a little easier. 🙂
